Van Belle and McMartin first time winners at Rapid Speedway

(July 21, 2006-Rock Rapids, IA) Mother Nature cooperated and Rapid Speedway was able to get another Sprint car event in this season after having two rained out in the past weeks. Brent Vonk picked up his first win of the season in the NMRA Sprints. Darrin Korthals picked up his fifth win of the year in Late Model Stock Cars. Devon McMartin got his first feature win in USRA B-Modifieds. Greg Roemen won his fourth Sportsmen feature of the year. Nick Van Belle was able to pick up his first win in the Hobby Stock feature. In the Factory Stock Dan Roemen got his second win of the year.
Troy Vink started on the pole of the NMRA Sprint feature and was able to lead the first two laps. Brent Vonk took the lead on lap three. Casey Heser and Randy Rosenboom battled for third until Jody Rosenboom moved up to join the battle. Jody Rosenboom’s night came to an end on lap nine when the caution came out for him. Vink’s night was also over during that caution with engine failure. On the restart Casey Abbas and Heser along with Dusty Wasmund raced for positions in the top five. The caution came out one last time for Brandon Stevenson which set up a dash to the finish. Abbas was able to lead one lap but that did not last long as Vonk worked his way back to the lead. The finish was very close but Vonk crossed the line first. Abbas came in second while Wasmund finished in third. Heser took the fourth spot and Brian Baker rounded out the top five.
Darrin Korthals was back to his old form by leading every lap en route to victory in the NMRA Late Model Stock Car feature. He was dominating the race until Don Gerritsen Jr was able to work his way up to challenge for the lead on lap nine. Gerritsen and Korthals battled lap after lap and coming to the line it was very close but Korthals edged Gerritsen out for the victory. Doug Brinkhous came in third and Anthony Mann took the fourth spot. Chad Overgaard finished in fifth.
Devon McMartin led every lap of the eight lap USRA B-Modified feature event. Andy Hofmeyer steadily made his way up through the field passing Ryan Woelber for fourth and Chris Huisman for third. Hofmeyer was Dale Furby for second when Hofmeyer spun on the last lap in turn two ending his chances for a top five finish. McMartin picked up his first win in a B-Modified. Furby, substituting for Tate Eining, finished in second while Clint Potter came in third. Huisman took the fourth position and Woelber rounded out the top five.
Greg Roemen led all 10 laps of the Sportsmen feature. The race started out with a caution when Glenn Wynia and Andy Gabrielson spun. Also having problems was Chris Huisman with a flat tire. Jon DeBoer looked to be a threat to take the lead early on but Roemen was able to gain control of the race. Huisman and Gabrielson worked there way back up to battle for the fourth position until the caution came out again for another flat tire for Huisman with three laps remaining. Roemen took the victory while DeBoer finished in second. Billy Sprock finished in third and Huisman came back to finish in fourth. Gabrielson rounded out the top five.
There were two early cautions in the Hobby Stock feature. The first was for Nick Van Belle and Dereck Vander Brink getting together in turn two. The second was for a big pile up between David Beman Jr., Bill Kroon, Justin Arends, and Vander Brink. When the race finally started Shane Klaassen was the race leader. He was battling with Van Belle and Kevin Joachim for the race lead. The other battle in the top five was between Jared Nytroe and Van Belle for the third spot. After all of Van Belle’s problems he was able to collect himself and take the race lead on lap eight. Van Belle led the remaining laps. Nytroe was able to get by Klaassen on the last lap for second. Arends took the fourth spot while Mark Vanden Top came in fifth.
Jim Klutman started on the pole of the Factory Stock feature. Dan Roemen started challenging for the race lead on lap one. He was able to take the lead by lap four. Greg Vande Velde battled with Klutman for second and Ryan Mulder worked his way up to join the battle. On the last lap Mulder spun out which changed the finishing order as they crossed the line. Roemen got the win while Vande Velde finished in second. Nathan Antrim took the third spot and Klutman captured fourth. Josh Kelderman ended up in fifth.
