Korthals wins first Wissota Late Model Race at Rapid Speedway

By Heather Riffel

(July 14, 2006-Rock Rapids, IA) Darrin Korthals, winningest driver at Rapid Speedway, picked up his first win in a Wissota Late Model. Doug Martens got his third win of the year in the Heartland Racing Association Wingless Sprint Car event. Chad Overgaard picked up his second win of the year in Late Model Stock Cars. Andy Hofmeyer continued his domination and picked up his eighth win of the season in USRA B-Modifieds. Chris Huisman also continued his domination in the Sportsmen feature and picked up his fifth win of the year. Bill Kroon continued the trend of repeat winners and picked up his third win of the season. In the Factory Stocks Mitch Van Engen got his third win of the year.

The Heartland Racing Association Wingless Sprint Car feature has become a spectacle to watch because it is unknown when a big dramatic accident will happen but almost every race one happens. It was no different in this feature. Doug Martens started on the outside pole and led the entire event. On lap five Andy Anderson, Brandon Stevenson, and Bret Mellenberndt all got together on the frontstretch. Mellenberndt ended up flipping across the frontstretch and getting hung up in the turn one wall. All of the drivers were able to walk away from the incident. The race ended in a green-white-checkered with Martens taking home the trophy. Willie Hasvold finished in second while Brandon Stevenson finished in third.

Chad Overgaard dominated the NMRA Late Model Stock by leading every lap and capturing the victory. The other car on the move was Scott Overgaard who battled with Darrin Korthals and Doug Brinkhous for third all throughout the race. Following Chad Overgaard to the line was Anthony Mann. Korthals came in third while Scott Overgaard finished in fourth. Brinkhous rounded out the top five.

Clint Potter led the beginning USRA B-Modified feature event. Andy Hofmeyer started in the seventh position and was up to second by lap three. There was a caution for debris on lap five. When the race restarted Hofmeyer was able to get around Potter. There were two more cautions before they were able to battle out the last few laps. Behind Hofmeyer, Aaron Plum and Kevin Broesder raced for the second position. Hofmeyer took the win while Plum came in second. Broesder took the third position while Ryan Woelber and Devin McMartin rounded out the top five.

Darrin Korthals led every lap and dominated the Wissota Late Model Stock Car feature. He was never challenged for the lead. It was his first win in a Wissota car. He was followed by Jason Fritzshe and Laura Mulder.

Chris Huisman started in the third position and was able to lead all the laps in the Sportmens feature. Glenn Wynia and Greg Roemen had the best battle of the race when they were racing for fourth. Huisman took the easy victory with Jon DeBoer following in second. Andy Gabrielson ended up in third and Roemen in fourth. Wynia was able to get the fifth position.

The Hobby Stock feature got off to a rough start with a big pile up between the cars of David Beman Jr., Shane Klaassen, Nick Van Belle, and Kevin Joachim. When the race finally started Chad Graves held on to the top spot. Graves slowed on lap three giving Dereck Vander Brink the lead. This would only last for a minute because then the caution came out for Graves and during the caution the driveline broke on Vander Brink’s car. This handed the lead to Bill Kroon. Kroon was able to lead the remainder of the laps and Mark VandenTop came across the line in second. Mike Buss finished in third and Graves came back from the flat tire to finish in fourth. Justin Arends rounded out the top five.

Dusty VanderBrink got out to the early race lead in the Factory Stock feature. He was quickly challenged for the race lead by Mitch Van Engen. On lap five VanderBrink got a little loose and that was all Van Engen needed to get around him. VanderBrink battled back but he did not have enough to get by Van Engen. VanderBrink held onto the second position while Greg Vande Velde finished in third. Jesse Ebbesen came in fourth while Dan Roemen finished in fifth.
