Typical Night of Racing Action Friday at Rapid Speedway
By Heather Riffel
(July 7, 2006-Rock Rapids, IA) Bret Mellenberndt, Jason Schoenefeld, Andy Hofmeyer, and Chad Graves were all repeat winners while Ryan Mulder, Jon DeBoer, and Don Gerritsen Jr. picked up their first wins of the year.
Bret Mellenberndt took the race lead from Dana Buttemeier on lap two of the Heartland Racing Association Wingless Sprint feature. He went on to lead the remainder of the laps without challenge. He picked up his third win of the year and his second in a row. Behind him Doug Martens and Buttemeier battled for second. Martens secured second while Buttemeier finished in third. Brandon Stevenson finished in fourth.
Don Gerritsen Jr started on the pole and was able to lead all but one lap of the NMRA Late Model Stock Car feature. He battled for most of the race with Chad Overgaard. Overgaard was able to lead lap 4 but that was the only lap that he would end up leading. That did not stop Overgaard from making it an exciting race though. Overgaard had troubles with two laps remaining and was not able to pick up a top five finish. This was Gerritsens first win of the year at his home track. Mark DeBoer who was substituting for Darrin Korthals finished in the second position. Scott Overgaard picked up third while Nick Beyenhof finished in fourth. Anthony Mann rounded out the top five.
Aaron Plum started on the pole and dominated the USRA B-Modified feature event. He had the race in his control until he got loose with two laps remaining and caused a caution. It was a heartbreaker for the driver who was going for his first win. His misfortune handed the lead over to Andy Hofmeyer who picked up his seventh win of the year. Devin McMartin finished in second while Nate Mosterd finished in third. Ryan Woelber was the last car running on the track in fourth.
Dale Furby took the early lead in the Wissota Late Model Stock Car feature. Jason Schoenefeld had a fast car and was side by side with Furby for the race lead by lap five. Schoenefeld led the remainder of the race. The caution came out with three laps remaining for Jason Fritzshe and Laura Mulder. This bunched the field together and Furby made one last attempt but Schoenefeld held on for his third win of the season. Furby finished in second while Randy Rosenboom placed in third. Dusty Wasmund substituting for Darrin Korthals came in fourth. Fritzshe rounded out the top five.
Greg Roemen, Jon DeBoer, and Glenn Wynia were all side by side for the race lead on the first lap of the Sportsmen feature. Roemen was credited with leading the first two laps until DeBoer was able to get past him and secure the race lead. A caution came out with three laps remaining and bunched the field giving Roemen one more chance to get by DeBoer. When it was all over DeBoer picked up his first win of the year. Chris Huisman was able to get by Roemen for second. Andy Gabrielson finished in fourth while Wynia came in fifth.
Chad Graves and Jared Nytroe started on the front row for the Hobby Stock feature. Going into the first lap the two cars got together causing both of them to get flat tires and the caution to come out. On the restart both cars started in the back. Shane Klaassen had the race lead and held on to it for most of the laps. Graves worked his way up through the field and by lap eight he was challenging for fourth. He continued to move up and got around Mark VandenTop and Klaassen for the race lead with three laps remaining. Graves made the impressive run from last to first and picked up his second win of the season. VandenTop finished in second while Klaassen was in third. Kevin Joachim finished in fourth while Bill Kroon came in fifth. Nytroe worked his way from the back to finish in eighth.
Ryan Mulder led all 8 laps to pick up his first win in the Factory Stock feature. He was challenged many times for the race lead by Dan Roemen and Dusty VanderBrink. In the end it was Mulders night and he took home the trophy. VanderBrink came in second while Weston DeJager finished in third. Jesse Ebbeson and Greg Vande Velde completed the top five. Roemen was black-flagged for smoke and finished in seventh.
