Shryock wins USMTS inaugural event at Rapid Speedway

By Heather Riffel

(June 23, 2006-Rock Rapids, IA) There was a huge crowd on hand despite threatening weather for the inaugural USMTS modified event at Rapid Speedway. The modifieds put on an exciting race despite being shortened by eleven laps when rain started falling. Kelly Shryock, six time USMTS champion and current point leader, took home the victory which was his third in as many nights. In other racing action Dan Van Bruggen won the B-Modifieds. Justin Arends picked up the Hobby Stock trophy and Weston DeJager won in the Factory Stocks.

There were 35 modifieds that came to Rock Rapids all trying to get one of the 24 starting positions in the A-Main. Jon Tesch started on the pole of the USMTS feature. The race got off to a great start with tons of side-by-side racing action. By lap three Kelly Shryock had moved from his fifth starting position to take the lead from Tesch. Al Hejna and Brad McEwan raced for third most of the race. McEwan was able to hold onto the position lap after lap. On lap 15 Hejna started to move backwards which brought Dean Mahlstedt up to the fourth position. A caution came out on lap 18 which bunched all the cars up again. The rain started to fall but the racing continued. On lap 18 Mark Noble who started fourteenth had made his way up to the fifth position. On lap 24 a caution came out when Hejna spun in turn four. During this caution it started to rain harder and the race was soon called. This gave Shryock the win and the $2000. He was followed by Tesch in second. Mahlstedt finished in the third position while Josh Reisch finished in fourth. Rounding out the top five was Noble.

Dan Van Bruggen started on the pole and led all 12 laps of a caution-filled USRA B-Modified feature event. At the start of the race Ryan Woelber, Clint Potter, and Kevin Broesder were three-wide for the third position. These top five cars continued to battle for the same positions lap after lap and in between five caution flags. On the white flag lap Potter and Hofmeyer were battling for third when Potter got way loose and lost many positions which kept him from a top five finish. Van Bruggen picked up his second win of the season with Devin McMartin coming in second. Hofmeyer finished in third while Keaton Sweeney finished in fourth. Brian Konz rounded out the top five.

Kevin Joachim started on the outside pole and took the race lead in the Hobby Stock feature. On lap four Justin Arends moved up to the first position but he could only hold onto the lead for one lap. Arends then fell back to battle with Dereck Vander Brink for the second position. Arends was able to move back up to challenge for the lead but he could not quite get around Joachim. There was a late caution for Shane Klaassen which led to a green-white-checkered. Arends was able to take the lead on the white flag lap. Arends picked up his second win of the season. Joachim followed in second. Mark Vanden Top got a third place finish while Bill Kroon came in fourth. Jared Nytroe scored a fifth place finish.

Weston DeJager was able to lead all eight laps of the Factory Stock feature to score his first win of the season. The red flag came out on lap four when Jesse Ebbeson lost a wheel and Russ Miller, Jim Klutman, and Cody Scholten all piled up when they had no where to go. When the race started again Ryan Mulder and Josh Kelderman battled for the second position. At the line it was DeJager followed by Mulder and Kelderman. Joshua Van Beek came in fourth and was the final car still running.

Make sure you are at Rapid Speedway next Friday night for more of this same great racing action plus the Late Models will be back on the track. The racing starts at 8:00pm. If you are looking for more USMTS racing action; check out Huset’s Speedway on July 20 when they will be racing their inaugural event.

Shryock makes it three straight with rain-shortened Rock Rapids victory

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa -- Kelly Shryock wrapped up a stellar week on the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series trail with a victory in Friday night's inaugural event at the Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa. A hearty crowd and a large turnout in the pit area was on hand as the seven-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champion captured his third win in three nights in his familiar white No. 3 Skyrocket modified.

The victory was worth $2,000 to the second-generation ace from Fertile, Iowa, as he led the last 21 of 24 laps in the rain-shortened main event which was originally scheduled for 35 laps.

Polesitter Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., jumped out to the early lead, but relinquished the top spot to Shryock on lap 3. Shryock, who started fifth but had moved into second place by the time the field exited the first turn at the start of the race, continued to lead Tesch around the 3/8-mile clay oval until the yellow flag was thrown on lap 24 for Al Hejna, who had stopped on the backstretch with a flat tire. During the caution, rain began to pelt the Lyons County Fairgrounds facility, and the event was called complete with Shryock garnering his 12th win in 24 starts this season.

Dean Mahlstedt of Clear Lake, Iowa, finished third behind Tesch, while rookie Josh Reisch of Luverne, Minn., turned in his best performance of the 2006 campaign with a fourth-place finish. Veteran Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie, Minn., stormed from the 14th starting spot to take home fifth-place money at the finish.
