Many repeat winners Friday night at Rapid Speedway

(June 9, 2006-Rock Rapids, IA) Darrin Korthals continued his domination at Rapid Speedway Friday night by winning his heat races in both the Wissota Late Models and the NMRA Late Models. He then went on to win the feature event and NMRA Late Models and he scored a third place finish in the Wissota feature. Other feature winners were Dana Buttemeier, Rick Goth, Andy Hofmeyer, Chris Huisman, Bill Kroon, and Daniel DeBeer.
The early part of the NMRA Late Model Stock Car feature was caution filled. Doug Brinkhous was on the pole and took the early lead. From the beginning he was constantly challenged by Darrin Korthals. They could not get much racing going though because there was a caution on lap one for Don Gerritsen Jr. That was followed by a caution on lap two for Dale Furby. The yellow flag waved again on lap three for Anthony Mann and Furby both spinning. The final caution came on lap six when Gerritsen again spun out. Once the racing got going it was a very close battle for the lead. Brinkhous and Korthals fought it out lap after lap. Korthals was able to get around Brinkhous in turn four with four laps remaining. Korthals was not challenged for the lead after that. He went on to pick up his third win of the season. Brinkhous ended up crossing the line in second. He was followed by Scott Overgaard, Chad Overgaard, and Gerritsen.
Dusty Ballenger started on the pole of the Heartland Racing Association Wingless Sprint Car feature. He was followed closely behind by Brett Mellenberndt. Mellenberndt got into and spun Ballenger on lap two. The race continued without caution and Ballenger fell to the back to regroup and try again. Dana Buttemeier was able to challenge for the lead and ended up taking the lead on lap five. The race for third was close between Andy Anderson and Doug Martens. On the last lap Mellenberndt tried one last time to get around Buttemeier but Buttemeier was just too strong. Buttemeier picked up his second win of the season. Mellenberndt finished in second while Anderson came in third. In fourth was Martens followed by Ballenger in fifth.
The Wissota Late Model Stock Car feature had Randy Rosenboom starting on the pole. He took the lead and led 12 of the 15 laps. Rick Goth and Dale Furby battled lap after lap for the second position. Behind them Darrin Korthals and Jason Schoenefeld battled for fourth. Schoenefeld was able to get by Korthals and Furby and challenged Goth for second. A caution came out with four laps remaining for Darin Veen. On the restart Goth went for the lead and was able to get by Rosenboom. Rosenboom was not able to challenge because he was protecting his second place spot from Korthals. When the checkered waved Goth crossed the finish line first giving him his first win at Rapid Speedway after his first start. He was followed by Rosenboom, Korthals, Furby, and Dan Jensen.
Jeremy Klaassen led the first three laps of the USRA B-Modified feature event. He was challenged for the lead by both Devin McMartin and Andy Hofmeyer. Hofmeyer was able to get around both cars and lead the remaining seven laps. Klaassen and McMartin continued the battle for second. With two laps remaining McMartin was able to secure second. The finishing order ended up being Hofmeyer, McMartin, and Klaassen followed by Aaron Plum, and Clint Potter. Hofmeyer picked up his fifth win of the season.
Going into turn one of the Sportsmen feature Andy Gabrielson and Glenn Wynia were side by side for the race lead. Wynia secured the top spot while Gabrielson dropped back to battle Chris Huisman for second. Huisman was able to get around Gabrielson and moved up to challenge Wynia for the lead. On lap 6 Huisman took the race lead. On the last lap Gabrielson and Nick Abraham were battling so hard for third that they both ended up off the track. Once everyone finally crossed the finish line it was Huisman bringing home his fourth trophy of the year followed by Wynia, Gabrielson, and Abraham. Jon DeBoer’s night ended early with his car finishing in the infield.
Randy Harlow started on the pole of the Hobby Stock feature. Behind him Bill Kroon, David Beman Jr., and Mark VandenTop were all battling closely to get to the lead. VandenTop was able to slide into the first spot. There was a late race caution when Nick Van Belle and Randy VanVeldhuizen got together. This sent the race to a green-white-checkered finish. Kroon was able to get by VandenTop on the last lap to take the race win. They were followed by Beman, Shane Klaassen, and Harlow.
Daniel DeBeer was able to lead all eight laps of the Factory Stock feature to score his second win of the season. His only challenge came from Dan Roeman who started the race in seventh and ended up finishing second. Third went to Jesse Ebbesen while Ryan Mulder and Dusty VanderBrink rounded out the top five.
Make sure you are at Rapid Speedway next Friday night for more of this same great racing action plus the Sprint Cars will be back on the track. The racing starts at 8:00pm.
