Roemen and Hofmeyer continue win streak Friday night
By Heather Riffel
(June 2, 2006-Rock Rapids, IA) Rapid Speedway was host to seven exciting feature events Friday night. Dan Roemen and Andy Hofmeyer were repeat winners after winning the night before at Husets Speedway. Darrin Korthals continued his domination at Rapid Speedway winning another NMRA Late Model Stock Car feature.
The NMRA Late Model Stock Car feature had a thrilling start with Dale Furby, Mark Henry, and Scott Overgaard all battling for the lead on the first lap. Henry ended up leading the first lap. The caution came out when Scott Overgaard, Chad Overgaard, Kenny Scholton, and Doug Brinkhous all get together in turn one. On the restart Henry is still leading and begins a battle with Furby. By lap three Darrin Korthals is battling Scott Overgaard and Anthony Mann to get to the front. By the fourth lap Korthals is in the lead after starting eighth. It becomes a race for second between Henry and Mann. The field gets strung out and Korthals picks up the victory, his second one at Rapid Speedway for the season. Mann ends up winning the battle for second over Henry. Scott Overgaard takes fourth while Furby places fifth.
After the first lap of the Heartland Racing Association Wingless Sprint Car feature Willie Hasvold was in the lead but when all the cars went into turn one of the second lap there was a pile-up starting in the front. The four cars involved were Hasvold, Doug Martens, Andy Anderson, and Brandon Stevenson. After a long caution and with only four cars remaining the feature was cut to eight laps. Dana Buttemeier had the lead on the restart. Brett Mellenberndt tried to go high and Martens tried the low line but neither one of them could stop Buttemeier from taking the win. He was followed by Mellenberndt, Martens, and Hasvold.
The Wissota Late Models put on an exciting race. Jason Fritzshe started on the pole and led many of the opening laps. On the first lap Dan Jensen and Jason Schoenefeld both went by second place Laura Mulder. This was immediately followed by a caution for Jody Rosenboom who spun out in turn one. On the restart Fritzshe and Schoenefeld battled for the lead while Dale Furby and Jensen battled for third. They battled it out for four laps until Fritzshe got a little bit of a lead on Schoenefeld. With the laps winding down Schoenefeld went to the high side in turn two and was able to get around Fritzshe for the race lead. Schoenefeld and Fritzshe continued with a strong battle but Schoenefeld was able to hold on for his first win in a Wissota Late Model. He was followed by Fritzshe and Furby for second and third. The fourth and fifth cars were Jensen and Darrin Korthals.
The B-Modified feature got off to a rough start with two cautions before making it through lap one. The first caution was for Aaron Plum and Scott Jones getting together. The second caution was for a false start. Once the race finally started Jeremy Klaassen was able to lead the first lap but Andy Hofmeyer proved he had a fast car by passing three cars to get to second after starting in fifth. By lap two Hofmeyer was battling Klaassen for the race lead which Hofmeyer was able to take as he pulled away from the rest of the pack. The battle for second was heated between Dan Van Bruggen, Klaassen, and Kevin Broesder. Van Bruggen was able to secure second and made a run for the lead. Van Bruggen was not able to get to Hofmeyer. Hofmeyer was able to take the win which was his second of the weekend. Plum ended up finishing third after his early caution. He was followed by Broesder and Nate Mosterd.
Chris Huisman was able to dominate the Sportsmen feature leading every lap after starting on the pole of the event. The early battle for second was between Jon DeBoer, Glenn Wynia, and Greg Roemen. Roemen ended up being taken out of contention by a flat tire. In the last few laps Wynia and DeBoer continued their battle with Wynia taking second and DeBoer finishing third. Roemen was able to come back to finish fourth while Ponch Hulstein rounded out the top five.
The Hobby Stock feature again showed domination by one car with Justin Arends leading flag to flag. There were some great battles behind him as Chad Graves and Shane Klaassen battled it out for second with Graves taking the place by only inches. Randy Harlow and Mark VandenTop battled it out for fourth and fifth.
Dan Roemen continued his domination from the night before by leading every lap in the Factory Stock feature. An early caution sent the cars of Josh Kelderman, Jesse Ebbesen, and Greg Vande Velde to the back. While Roemen was leading Ryan Mulder and Daniel DeBoer battled it out for second. Mulder took the second spot and he was followed by Ebbesen who came from the back to finish third. DeBoer and Ronald McClere finished out the top five.
