Korthals Ties All Time Record; Ballenger Blasts Rapid Speedway
By Shawn Neisteadt
(July 8, 2005Rock Rapids, IA) One week after and expiring engine cost Dusty Ballenger the win, Ballenger would not be denied a victory as he took home the win in the sprint cars. The biggest story of the night was Darrin Korthals as he took his 40th career win in the late model stock car feature. That win tied David Krueger in the track record books for most wins at the speedway.
Korthals started eighth in the feature and quickly made his way up to second. The race was far from over however as he stuggled to challenger Colter Deutsch for the lead. Things heated up even more when Don Gerritsen JR moved into thrid on the sixth lap and began to challenge Korthals for second on lap seven.
Soon it was a three car battle for the lead between Deutsch, Korthals and Gerritsen. The top three battled door to door until lap 13 when Deutsch slipped high in turn two. That one little mistake was enough to allow Korthals to take the lead and drive off with the long awaited victory. Doug Brinkhous stole second in the closing laps with Gerritsen third. Scott Overgaard took fourth and Deutsch was fifth.
Randy Droescher took the early lead of the sprint car feature but was soon pressured by Dusty Ballenger for that top spot. Droescher would hold on as the action behind the leaders was wild.
The race slowed on lap 7 when Randy Rosenboom flipped in the exit of turn two. Not only was Rosenboom unharmed, but he was also able to push off for the restart. The news wasnt so good for the younger Jody Rosenboom. Jody had made his way to the third position, but had a left rear tire go flat during the red flag period. The car made its way to the work area and then back to the track, starting at the tail.
At the halfway point of the 18 lap feature, Ballenger and Droescher were again side by side battling for the lead. This time as they came off turn four, it was Ballenger with the lead. That was the winning move as he went on to his third win of the year. Butch Hanssen was second with Johnn Cressman third. Jesse Drost took fourth followed by Droescher.
Billy Sprock took the lead of the sportsmen feature from Chris Huisman and would never relinquish the position as he claimed his first win of the season. Greg Roemen mounted a hard charge the win but fell just a few feet short as he took second. Third went to Huisman followed by Kevin Broesder and John DeBoer.
In the first four laps of the hobby stock feature there were three different leaders. Nick Van Belle was the original leader but gave the position to Jason Vande Vegte in turn four. The rear end of Vande Vegtes #18 soon gave way, giving the lead back to Van Belle. Then on lap four, the lead again swapped as Mark VandenTop took over. VandenTop would never give the lead up as he led the final eight laps to take his second win of the year. Dereck VanDerBrink was second with third going to Marlo DeJager. Van Belle was fourth with Kevin Joachim fifth.
Daniel DeBeer had the factory stock feature well in hand as he looked to take his first ever win. Luck was not on DeBeers side however as he cut a tire down on the final lap which gave the win to Derrick Nordstrom. Several cars tangled on the opening lap of the feature when Jeff Foster got into Ron McClure. McClure and Foster starting spinning on the front stretch and clipped Jared Nytroe ending his race. Cody Scholton also cut a tire down in the incident.
Mike Koepke took the win in the super modified feature.
