Ballenger Rim Rides to Victory at Rapid Speedway

(June 17, 2005-Rock Rapids, IA) Falling from the sixth starting position to twelfth in the field was not too much for Dusty Ballenger to overcome as he drove to the win in the Sprint Car feature Friday night at Rapid Speedway.
Mike Sandvig took the initial lead of the sprint car feature with Gordy Vogelaar in hot pursuit. One lap into the race, Butch Hanssen made his way by Shawn Van Wyhe and into fourth in turn four. One lap later, Vogelaar was attempting to take the lead when he slipped too high and lost ground on the leader. On the third lap, Ryan Bickett took second from Vogelaar as they entered turn one. Van Wyhe made his way back around Hanssen and into fourth on lap four.
The yellow waved on lap six when Justin Jacobsma stopped on the backstretch. On the restart, Vogelaar pulled out of the line as they green started to wave and then made his way to the infield. On lap eight, the battle between Hanssen and Van Wyhe continued as the swapped third several times. Dusty Ballenger broke into the top five on lap nine as he took the position form Eric Lutz.
Bickett was going for the lead on lap eleven when he too went too high in turn four. Bickett then looped around on the frontstretch in front of many oncoming cars. All drivers avoided contact and Bickett was able to restart at the tail of the field.
One lap after the restart, Ballenger drove by Sandvig in turn two and the race had a new leader. Ballenger went on for the win with Sandvig second. Third went to Hanssen. Jody Rosenboom drove from fourteenth to fourth with Jesse Drost rounding out the top five.
Doug Brinkhous led all 15 laps of the Late Model Stock Car feature for his first win of the year, however it was perhaps the best race of the night with three wide racing often. Brinkhous and Mark DeBoer ran side by side on the first lap and continued to battle all the way through lap four. On the fifth lap, Don Gerritsen JR made his way by Colter Deutsch and into third. On the next lap, it was three wide for fourth with Chad Overgaard, Scott Overgaard and Deutsch. Darrin Korthals made his way into the battle making it a party of four for fourth place. On lap seven, Scott Overgaard took fourth with Korthals into fifth.Korthals then made his way by and into fourth.
Lap nine started the battle for second between DeBoer and Gerritsen. That battle was tremendous as DeBoer and Gerretsen drove to Brinkhous making it a three car race for first. On lap eleven, Gerritsen made his way by DeBoer and into second. On lap 12, it was Korthals and DeBoer battling for third, but the first six cars of the field were all bunched together.
At the checkered it was Brinkhous with Gerritsen second. Third went to Korthals followed by DeBoer. Scott Overgaard was fifth.
Greg Roemen took the lead of the sportsmen feature from Chris Huisman on lap 9 of the 12 lap event and went on to the win. Huisman was second with third going to Kevin Broesder. Jamie Tieszen was fourth followed by Jason Grant.
Mark VandenTop made the pass for the win in the final turn of the 12 lap Hobby Stock feature. Colin Sprock led the entire distance until the final turn, but was disqualified in post race inspection for not having the required restrictor plate in the car. Second was credited to Justin Arends with third going to Jason DeBoer. Jason VandeVegte was fourth with fifth going to Marlo DeJager.
Derrick Nordstrom won the factory stock feature followed by Jared Nytroe, Adam Jenniges and Ron McClure.
Rapid Speedway races again this Friday at 8 pm.
