Drost, DeBoer top Rapid Speedway

By Shawn Neisteadt

(June 10, 2005- Rock Rapids, IA) With more rain than even ducks can handle, the weather in Northwest Iowa has been less than perfect for the world or motorsports. However, a combination of water pumping, hard work, and dedication worked the surface of the water logged Rapid Speedway into an acceptable condition late in the afternoon. When the green flag waved the track was wicked fast with great racing in all five classes.

Casey Haser took the lead fo the sprint car feature as the green flag waved on the 15 lap event. Pole sitter, Eric Lutz fell into line behind Haser in the second position followed by Jesse Drost, Randy Droescher and Rob Danielson.

On lap two Drost pulled alongside of Lutz and they ran side by side for second. On the third lap, Drost took second from Lutz as they raced off turn two. On that same lap, Jody Rosenboom made the pass on Rob Danielson to put Rosenboom into fifth.

Haser met lap traffic on the seventh circuit of the event while leading Drost by three car lengths. With Haser struggling with the slower traffic, Drost was ablel to pull up to the bumper of Heser’s #75C on lap eight.

The lead swapped hands on lap ten when Drost sliced to the inside of Heser in turn one to snatch the lead. Heser tried to battle back but clipped the right rear tire of Drost’s #27. Heser, a sprint car rookie, did a great job to keep the car from tumbling and held on to his second position.

At the finish it was Drost with a sizable lead. The win was Drost’s first win at Rapid Speedway. Second went to Heser with Lutz third. Rosenboom made his way to fourth followed by Droescher.

If it wasn’t for bad luck, Mark DeBoer would have had no luck through the first four nights of the 2005 season at Rapid Speedway. Minor mechanical problems have plagued the Ellsworth, MN driver in the early part of the season, but that was all turned around in Friday night’s late model stock car feature.

Colter Deutsch took the initial lead of the event with Don Grems following. On the first lap, DeBoer made his way into second as he overtook Grems entering turn one. On the second lap, Deutsch and DeBoer were side by side for the lead with DeBoer grabbing the top spot entering turn three. Don Gerritsen, JR was driving to the front and started to battle Deustch for second on lap five. That lasted three laps until the an oil line on the #5 of Deutsch came off igniting a very large fire ball as he entered the third turn. The flash was spectacular, but the damage was done as Deutsch was done for the night.

On the resulting restart, Gerritsen was able to pull alongside DeBoer for the lead, but the defending track champion drove away in the closing laps to take his first win of the year. Gerritsen was second with third going to Rick Vander Weide. Nick Beyenhof was fourth and fifth went to Chad Overgaard.

Kevin Broesder took the initial lead of the Sportsmen feature with Jamie Tieszen in second. Tieszen worked all over the back bumper of Broesder for the first eight laps of the race. On lap nine, Tieszen finally made his way by Broesder and drove off to the win. Broesder was second with third going to Chris Huisman. Brad Winesberg scored a fourth place finish in his first start at Rapid Speedway and Greg Roemen was fifth.

Dave Kennedy led the first three laps of the Hobby Stock feature, but it was Justin Arends driving from fifth on the starting grid to the lead on the fourth circuit of the speedway. Arends went on to the win followed by Jason DeBoer. Marlo DeJager was third. Jason VandeVegte charged his way into the top five, then got out of the groove and fell to nearly the back of the pack. VandeVegte then worked his way back to a fourth place finish followed by Mark VandenTop.

Adam Jenniges was celebrating his nineteenth birthday on Friday night as he arrived at the track. What did Jenniges get for his birthday, a trophy for the feature win in the factory stocks. Jared Nytroe finished second followed by Derrick Nordstrom.

Rapid Speedway will race again this Friday night at 8 P.M. Rapid speedway is located on the historic Lyon County Fairgrounds in Rock Rapids, IA.
