Jody Rosenboom Wins, Korthals Remains Unbeaten at Rapid Speedway
By Shawn Neisteadt
(Rock Rapids, IAMay 27, 2005) Jody Rosenboom topped a tough field of cars and an even tougher track in Friday nights Sprint Car feature at Rapid Speedway. Darrin Korthals continued his domination in the Late Model Stock Cars, while Greg Roemen and Jason DeBoer were also victorious.
Eric Lutz ran strong in his heat race and sat on the front row of the 18 lap Sprint Car feature. That starting position was all for not as mechanical problems parked the #5 before one lap was counted. Justin Jacobsma took the lead when the field restarted, but it was Jody Rosenboom charging f rom the third row to the lead as the pack came off turn four. Rosenboom led the rest of the distance to take his first win of the season at Rapid Speedway.
The event was full of action however as several yellow flags waved in the event. Two laps into the race the yellow came out for Dusty Ballenger and Troy Vink as the banged together in turn three and each car came to a rest with damage. That happened as they battled for fourth place. Each driver was able to restart. Another caution period came on lap six when again it was two cars battling in the top five tangled together and again it was in turn three. This time it was Butch Hanssen and Jesse Drost locking wheels and halting drawing the caution. Just as in the earlier incident, each driver was able to restart. Tyler Urban, in his second ever start in a sprint car, spun his Riley Racing #27T on lap nine and again on lap 12 to end his night.
At the finish is was Jody Rosenboom by eight car lengths over Steve Ballenger. Jacobsma had one if his best ever finished as he crossed the line third followed by Randy Rosenboom. Chuck McGillivray finished fifth.
Entering the fourth night of the 2005 season at Rapid Speedway, Darrin Korthals was yet to be beat in the Late Model Stock Car feature. That would not change when this night came to an end. Nick Beyenhof led at the drop of the greeen. However, as the first lap was counted, Korthals had already moved from ninth to fourth. On the second lap Korthals moved passed Don Grems and into third. Grems then spun his #99.
On the restart, it was a three car battle for the lead as Beyenhof, Korthals and Rick VanderWeide raced three wide. VanderWeide then made his way to the lead on lap three as they raced off turn four. The same three drivers were all battling for the lead again on lap six. That is the lap that Korthals went by Beyenhof and VanderWeide and into the lead. Beyenhof fell in line behind Korthals and VanderWeide was soon under attack for third. Scott Overgaard made the most of that battle and moved into third on lap eight.
At the finish it was Korthals ahead of Beyenhof and Overgaard. VanderWeide finished fourth with Chad Overgaard fifth. Korthals is now within one win of meeting the career wins record of Rapid Speedway.
Greg Roemen took the lead of the Sportsmen feature in the third turn of the opening lap and drove away from the field as he took his third win of the year. Kevin Broesder was second followed by Chris Huisman. Jamie Tieszen and Jon DeBoer rounded out the top five.
The action of the Hobby Stock feature came to a stop on lap five of the event when the #27C of Colin Sprock slipped high in turn four. The rear axle then snapped on the car lifting the macine into the air while it slammed into the wall. Sprock got out of the car on his own, but was transfered to a local hospital for observations. He has since been released as in the process of rebuilding his car to return this Friday night. Dereck VanderBrink led the first six laps of the event, but on lap seven, Jason DeBoer took the lead as they entered turn one. DeBoer led from there for his second win of the year. Mark VandenTop was second followed by Marlo DeJager. Kevin Joachim took fourth followed by Justin Arends.
Rapid Speedway races again this Friday night.
