Korthals Unbeatable, Runge Rights Season

(Rock Rapids, IA–May 20, 2005) After struggling with mechanical troubles and destroying a race car in a wreck, Mitch Runge finally looked to be back to his winning ways Friday night as the dominated the Sprint Car feature at Rapid Speedway. In the Late Model Stock Cars, Darrin Korthals put his #11k where it has been each and every night thus far in the season, victory lane.
Runge drove from the pole position to the lead of the Sprint Car feature at the drop of the green with Casey Abbas charging from fifth to second in just three laps. With Abbas on the bumper of Runge on lap eight, fans took note of another car makeing his way through the pack. That was the #2D of Dusty Ballenger. Ballenger was wheeling his car from the thirteenth starting position and made his way into the top five on lap six. After a restart, Ballenger would lose hold of his high line and slipped back to eighth. Not all was lost as he drove back through the top five.
At the finish it was Runge ahead of Abbas. Dusty Ballenger came to the line third with his father, Steve Ballenger fourth. Butch Hanssen took fifth.
Starting eight was not too much for Darrin Korthals in the Late Model Stock Car feature. As Korthals made his way into fifth on lap two, Mark DeBoer was taking the lead from Rick VanderWeide. Korthals continued his charge to the front and chased down DeBoer on lap nine. Those two ran door to door until Korthals snuck into the lead with a slide job in turn one on lap 11. Korthals took his third win of the year with DeBoer in second. Chad Overgaard was third with fourth going to Scott Overgaard. Don Gerritsen, Jr led the opening lap and finished fifth.
Chris Huisman made the most of a nice starting position and led every lap of the Sportsmen feature for his first win of the year. Jamie Tieszen took second with third going to Greg Roemen. Kevin Broesder and Jon DeBoer finished the top five running order.
The Hobby Stock feature shook up with three laps remaining. Mark VanDenTop, Brett Larson and Kevin Joachim drove off turn two, three wide for the lead. VanDenTop and Larson got together and started sliding down the back stretch. Alicia Ahrendt was running just behind the leader and got collected sending her flipping. The rest of the field made their way by, however Ahrendt, VanDenTop and Larson were on the infield for the rest of the event. No drivers were harmed.
Joachim assumed the top spot and drove to his third career win. Jason DeBoer finished a close second with third going to Marlo DeJager. Justin Arends was fourth with fifth going to Dereck VanderBrink.
Adam Jenniges brought his cheering section to their feet with his win in the factory stock feature.
