McGillivray gets first win, Korthals second win at Rapid Speedway

(September 10, 2004 – Rock Rapids, IA) Eric McGillivray held on in the sprint car feature to score his first ever win at Rapids Speedway. In the late model stock car class if was the defending champion, Darrin Korthals, dominating the event for his second win of the year.
Eric McGillivray jumped to the initial lead of the 18 lap sprint car feature as the green flag was issued. Brent Vonk settled in second with a battle behind him for third. With one lap down, Chuck McGillivray took the third spot from Justin Jacobsma. Jacobsma then slipped too high and off the track, giving up many positions. The caution flag waved with two laps counted when Mike Forseth spun off turn two.
On the restart, Steve Ballenger took the third position from Chuck McGillivray. One lap later, Butch Hanssen drove into the top five as he overtook Terry Reilly. Brent Vonk took over the lead entering one on the sixth lap, but the pass was negated as the caution flag came out for the #27 of Jesse Drost who was slowing with engine problems.
McGillivray led to the green with 12 laps to go, and was not challenged again until the closing laps, however there was no stopping the young man from Canton, SD from taking his first win. Steve Ballenger was second from the eighth starting spot. Butch Hanssen climbed to third from ninth. Chuck McGillivray was fourth with fifth going to Gordy Vogelaar who started fourteenth.
Darrin Korthals took advantage of his pole starting spot in the Late Model Stock Car feature to take his second win of the year. Behind Korthals was some great racing. Dog Brinkhous took second. Scott Overgaard and Brad Klaassen swapped third place countless times throughout the feature, with Overgaard taking third just ahead of Klaassen. Rick Goth finished in fifth. The points leader, Mark DeBoer had his night come to an end when the #22w of Heath Warntjes spun entering turn three. DeBoer had no where to go and the two cars piled together. Both were done for the rest of the feature.
Anthony Mann claimed his fourth win of the season in the Sportsmen feature. Mann took the lead just 2 laps into the event and led the rest of the way for the victory. Chris Huisman was second followed by Nick Beyenhof. Don Gerritsen Jr and Billy Sprock rounded out the top five.
Denton Potter led all 12 laps of the Hobby Stock feature for his third win of the year. Lane Brenden showed why he is doing so well in the Lake County Speedway points as he finished second. Jon DeBoer was third followed by Colter Deutsch and Justin Arends.
Rapid Speedway ends its 2004 season this Friday night. There will also be special events including a mechanics race, women on wheels and an officials race.
