Jody Rosenboom tops Rapid Speedway

By Shawn Neisteadt

(Rock Rapids, IA—August 6, 2004) Jody Rosenboom would hold strong and take the win of the sprint car feature Friday night at Rapid Speedway. Mark DeBoer, Jamie Tieszen and Colter Deutsch were also victorious.

Jordan Martens raced from the pole position to the initial lead of the Sprint Car 18 lap feature. Jody Rosenboom fell into second with Brent Vonk and Terry Reilly fallowing. With one lap counted, Brian Baker moved into the top five as he raced off the second turn. Butch Hanssen, the two-time and defending champion, drove into the top five on the fouth lap as he passed Baker. Two laps later, Hanssen moved to the high side of turn one and overtook Reilly for fourth place. On the same lap, Brent Vonk slipped high in turn four allowing Hanssen to take third.

By the tenth lap of the race, the lead Martens had built up had diminished as Rosenboom pulled even for the lead. Rosenboom then took over the lead as they came off turn four. Martens brakes had heated up and went away by the mid-way point of the 18 lap event.

As the leaders pulled into lap traffic on lap 11, the yellow flag came out as the #7 of Mike Sandvig slowed on the backstretch.

Hanssen overtook Martens for second on the restart, but no one was able to chase down Rosenboom as the second generation driver raced to his second win of the year. Hanssen was second with Vonk coming forward for third. Jordan Martens held on for fourth with Steve Ballenger making a last lap pass for fourth as he edged Reilly on the final lap.

Baker and Vonk were the winners of the heat races.

The Late Model Stock Car feature was full of twists and turns. Justin Glaser took the initial lead, but it was Darrin Korthals taking the lead in turn four to complete the first lap. With one lap counted, Mark DeBoer, Mark Van Voorst and Heath Warntjes ran three-wide as they battled for third. DeBoer drove into the third plae with Van Voorst following.

n the second lap, DeBoer took second from Glaser and set his eyes on the lead. Korthals continued to lead when the caution flag waved on lap nine when Glaser spun in turn three. Korthals led the pack back to the green, but the car slowed in turn two and the leader went to the infield. DeBoer inherited the lead and went on to the victory. Scott Overgaard drove his Schwanke sealed engine to second with third going to Rick Goth. Doug Brinkhous was fourth with fifth going to Darwin Klaassen.

Korthals and Overgaard won the heat races for the Late Model Stock Cars.

A lap 10 caution set the Sportsmen feature up for a two lap dash to the finish. Kevin Broesder had led from the start of the race, but on the final lap, the defending Lake County Speedway champion, Jamie Tieszen, battled for the lead off turn two. The race came to the final corner where Tieszen took over the lead for his first Rapid Speedway win of the year. Broesder was second with third going to Billy Sprock. Greg Roeman was fourth with Don Gerritsen Jr in fifth. Broesder and Nick Beyenhof won the heat races.

It was a two lap shootout in the Hobby Stock feature as well. Josh Klay had led form the start of the race, but it was Colter Deutsch taking over the lead on lap 10. The caution then waved one lap later. Deutsch led the final two laps for the win. Klay took second with Jon DeBoer third. Denton Potter was fourth with fifth going to Justin Arends.
