Hanssen Scores Third Rapid Speedway Win of Year

(June 25, 2004-Rock Rapids, IA) It was Daryl Reverts taking the early lead of the NMRA 360 sprint feature Friday Night at Rapid Speedway. The race was slowed with one lap counted when the #42 of Kevin Flowers ran off turn three. The checking up cars gave Ben Van Vooren a blockade and the rookie driver flipped.
On the restart, Butch Hanssen drove from sixth to fourth. Then on the second lap, Hanssen drove past Jordan Martens and into third. The caution soon waved again, but Hanssen was on the move as the green replaced the yellow. Hanssen took to the bottom of Rob Danielson and drove into second. On the third lap it was Hanssen taking the lead from Reverts in turn four, but the pass was negated at Ryan Bickett slowed with mechanical troubles slowing the pace.
It didn't take long for Hanssen to take the lead as he took the top spot in the second turn just after the restart with Danielson following into second. On the fifth lap Brent Vonk drove into fifth as he passed Randy Rosenboom. Martens took third from Reverts on the same lap. On the next lap, Vonk continued his charge as he passed Reverts for fourth with Rosenboom following into fifth.
The leaders had entered lap traffic on lap eight when Shawn Van Wyhe drove into the third turn, clipped Jody Rosenboom and tumbled. Van Wyhe was out for the rest of the race, but unharmed. Jody Rosenboom was able to restart.
Hanssen rocketed to his third win of the year with Danielson placing nicely in second. Vonk charged from ninth to take third. Gordy Vogelaar was a hard charger as he passed his way from fourteenth to fourth. Steve Ballenger also put on a passing clinic driving from eighteenth to fifth. Hanssen, Martens and Vogelaar won the heat races.
Darrin Korthals took the lead of the Late Model Stock Car feature as the race began. Korthals worked away from the field only to have the caution flag erase that lead with eight laps remaining. Justin Glaser had erupted a transmission and slowed on the track. The restart put Mark DeBoer on the bumper of Korthals, and in typical fashion the two leaders showed the fans what a good stock car race is. DeBoer used the inside while Korthals was on top of the track. They raced side by side for several laps until DeBoer drove into the lead on lap 12. That was the pass for the win as DeBoer picked up his fourth win of the year at Rapid Speedway. Korthals finished second with Brad Klaassen third. In his first appearance at the speedway in several years, Lee Schlumbohm took fourth with Don Bickett fifth. Korthals and Brad Klaassen won the heat races.
The Sportsmen feature was all Nick Beyenhof as the sophomore driver led all 12 laps of the event to score his first win of the year. Mel Elsberry took several shots at the lead but settled for second with Billy Sprock third. Anthony Mann drove from tenth to take fourth with fifth going to Greg Roeman. Elsberry and Chris Huismann won the heat races.
Josh Klay drove from ninth to the lead in just over one lap in the Hobby Stock feature to take his third win of the year. Jon DeBoer was second with third going to Denton Potter. Mark Vanden Top took fourth with Larry Kracht fifth. DeBoer, Kracht and Dereck Vander Brink won the heat races. Dan Kannegeiter won the "B" feature.
