Randy Rosenboom wins Rapid Speedway Sprint Feature

By Shawn Neisteadt

(June 4, 2004-Rock Rapids, IA) In a feature event that drew cheers from all in attendance, Randy Rosenboom grabbed the win at Rapid Speedway. Mark DeBoer made late moves to take the Late Model Stock Car win with Greg Roeman winning the Sportsmen event. Colter Deutsch celebrated his marriage one day early by taking the checkereds in the Hobby Stock feature. It was truly a great night of racing after being rained out two straight weeks.

As the green flag waved on the NMRA sprint feature it was Randy Rosenboom in the top spot. The red flag halted racing with just one lap counted when Doug Martens flipped in turn four. Martens was able to walk away from the tip-over.

On the restart, Butch Hanssen was moving as he took fourth from Brian Baker. One more lap was counted before the cars slowed for the #7x of Daryl Reverts who has looped in turn four. The green soon waved once again, and it was Hanssen charging past Jody Rosenboom and Justin Jacobsma to take the second position. Again the yellow was out for Daryl Reverts on lap five when his ill-handling car again spun in turn four.

The action for the top spot heated up on the restart. Randy Rosenboom led the pack to the green, but Hanssen took the lead as they raced down the backstretch. Randy Rosenboom held strong to his groove and powered into the lead once again off turn four. Hanssen was soon challenged for second place by Baker. Baker pulled alongside the #8k and drove into second as they came off turn four on lap six. Hanssen pulled back to Baker on lap nine, but the Rock Rapids driver of the #25 held strong to second. One the tenth lap the second position swapped when Hanssen got the run past Baker on the exit of turn two.

Out front it was Randy Rosenboom maneuvering flawlessly through lap traffic and grabbing his first win since his Rapid Nationals victory in September of 2000. Hanssen, the defending track champion drove from eighth to second with Gordy Vogelaar sneaking his way up to third. Fourth went to Baker and Shawn Van Wyhe took fifth. Hanssen and Baker won the heat races.

The more things change, the more they stay the same in the Late Model Stock Car class at Rapid Speedway. For years Darrin Korthals and Mark DeBoer have brought the fans to their feet with clean, competitive and exciting racing. Friday night's feature was no exception.

Darwin Klaassen had the initial lead of the feature with Korthals jumping into the second on that start. Just one lap into the race, Korthals moved pasted Darwin Klaassen and into the top spot. DeBoer was charging from his ninth starting position and pulled alongside Scott Overgaard on lap three as they battled for fifth. On the fourth lap, one of the most amazing sights to witness happened in turn two. Overgaard, Justin Glaser, DeBoer and Heath Warntjes ran an awe-inspiring four-wide off turn two. That action moved DeBoer to third place and Overgaard into fourth.

The field was working its eighth lap when DeBoer moved past Darwin Klaassen and into second. The caution bunched the field up on lap ten when the #22w of Warntjes spun. On the restart, Overgaard charged into third.

With three laps remaining in the 15 lap event, DeBoer pulled to the outside and alongside Korthals for the lead. Korthals would hold the top spot. A couple more laps ticked by, but as the top cars went past the white flag Korthals and DeBoer where door-to-door. DeBoer used the high groove and took the lead off turn two. Korthals charged back to the inside in turn three, but the Hickorytech #23 of DeBoer was too strong as he led just three quarters of a lap for his third win of the year. Korthals was second with Overgaard third. Jesse Ackerman drove from tenth to fourth with Brad Klaasses rounded out the top five. Korthals and DeBoer were victorious in the heat races.

Greg Roeman took the lead of the Sportsmen feature just one lap into the event on a restart. Roeman led the rest of the way for the win. Rick Vander Weide tried to catch Roeman as he drove into second on the fifth lap, but was unable to do so. Roeman's win was his first of the year and second of his career. Vander Weide took second with Anthony Mann third. Marty Halouska was fourth with Jamie Tieszen fifth. Vander Weide, Don Gerritsen, and Chris Huisman grabbed the victories of the heat races.

One day before he was to be married, Colter Deutsch drove to his second Hobby Stock win of the year at Rapid Speedway. Deutsch started eighth and drove past Denton Potter on the fourth lap to take the lead. The final eight laps had Deutsch out front heading to the win. Mark VandenTop drove from tenth to second. Third went to Thomas Doeden with Jon DeBoer fourth. Potter took home the fifth position.

Colter Deutsch, Mike Deutsch and Potter won the heat races for the Hobby Stocks. Marlo DeJager, subbing for Dereck Vander Brink took the win of the "B" feature.

Rapid Speedway races again this Friday night at 8pm sharp.
