Rosenboom wins at Rapid Speedway

(Aug 29, 2003-Rock Rapids, IA) Ryan Bickett took the early lead of the NMRA 360 Sprint Car feature on Friday night. Only one lap was counted when the race had its first yellow flag as Steve Ballenger slowed on the backstretch. On the resulting restart, a few cars made contact in turn two causing several to check up. Micah Schliemann was caught up in the incident and his #9 sustained enough damage to take him out of the race.
The green soon waved again and on the move was Dusty Ballenger. Ballenger moved into the top five on the restart the non lap three Balleger took fourth from Brian Baker. Baker raced back to retake fourth on the fifth lap of the race. At the halfway point of the 18 lap race, Bickett received his first challenge for the lead as Jody Rosenboom pulled wheel to wheel. Rosenboom took the lead entering turn one just past the halfway mark. The leaders then entered lap traffic on lap 10. The slower traffic allowed Rosenboom to walk away from the rest of the field and Bickett as his brakes were failing.
Ballenger was again on the move as he moved back into fourth on lap nine then on lap 11 Ballenger took third from Shawn Van Wyhe. Two laps later Ballenger took second from Bickett and Dusty Zomer pulled into fourth as he overtook Van Wyhe.
Out front it was all Rosenboom as the rookie took his second win of the year. Ballenger came from tenth to second and Zomer charged from eleventh to take third. Van Wyhe finished fourth ahead of Baker.
Chad Overgaard took the lead of the Late Model Stock Car class one lap into the event and never looked back as he dominated the 15 lap event to score the win. The win was Overgaard's first win at Rapid Speedway in Late Model Stock Car competition. John DeGroot finished second. Darrin Korthals finished third after starting ninth. Korthals also took over the point lead with a four point advantage over Mark DeBoer. DeBoer had a nine point edge going into the night but lost an engine in the heat race. David Kruger took fourth and fifth place went to Jason DeBoer.
Greg Roeman and Rick Vander Weide raced door to door for the lead of the Sportsmen feature for the majority of the race. As if the race was not exciting enough, the yellow flag came out as the white flag was being displayed setting up a two laps dash to the finish. In those two laps, Roeman used the outside with Vander Weide on his inside. The momentum of the high groove was enough to propel Roeman to the win by a matter of inches over Vander Weide. Mel Elsberry finished a close third with Jeff Hoogendoorn in fourth and Don Gerritsen Jr. in fifth.
Colter Deutsch took the lead of the Hobby Stock feature on the fifth lap of the event and went on to his fifth win of the season at Rapid Speedway. Chris Tiesler had a career best finish in the second position. Mark VandenTop took third with Troy Woelber in fourth. Jon DeBoer finished in fifth.
Rapid Speedway races again this Friday night then has its season championship on September 12.
