Hanssen on a roll at Rapid Speedway

(August 8, 2003-Rock Rapids, IA) Rob Danielson grabbed the initial lead of the Sprint Car feature on Friday night. On the second lap of the race, Butch Hanssen passed Dusty Ballenger in turn two and moved into fifth place. The lead changed hands five laps into the event as Steve Ballenger moved the #3 into the top spot. One lap later Hanssen took fourth from Brian Baker.
The race was seven laps old when Randy Droescher took over second place from Danielson. Danielson continued to slip through the field as the engine went sour on the #46. Hanssen was still charging forward on lap 12 when he overtook second from Droescher. With only four laps remaining in the 18 lap event the lead changed hands for the final time. Hanssen delivered a slide job to Steve Ballenger as they came off turn four to take over the top spot. Ballenger then slipped off the speedway entering turn one and brought out the caution.
Hanssen held the lead at the restart and brought the field to the checkereds for the second straight week. Droescher was second and third went to Baker. Dusty Zomer came from thirteenth to take fourth and Shawn Van Wyhe came from eleventh to round out the top five. Danielson, Randy Rosenboom and Brent Vonk won the heat races.
Jason DeBoer had not won at Rapid Speedway since 1999, and had never won in the Late Model Stock Car class. That all changed Friday night as Jason DeBoer held off the strong field to grab the win. Mark Henry chased the whole race but never managed to make the move into the top spot. Mark DeBoer came from ninth to take third and Darrin Korthals was fourth. Chad Overgaard came back from an early race spin to take fifth. Third through fifth place was the battle at the checkered flag as they all traded position all the way to the finish line. Jason DeBoer and Henry took the heat race wins.
Don Gerritsen, Jr set the Hobby Stock class ablaze in his rooking season last year. This year he moved to the sportsmen class, and Friday night he took his first win in the division. Gerritsen held off a hard fighting Rick Vander Weide to take the victory. Vander Weide settled for second place with Chris Huisman in third. Jeff Hoogendoorn was fourth and Evan DeHaan took fifth place. Mel Elsberry had a strong run going until tangling with a few cars on lap two. Elsberry's night ended behind the tow truck. Huisman and Kevin Broesder took wins in the heat races.
Just as in the other stock car classes, there was a new winner in the Hobby Stocks. Troy Woelber led the entire Hobby Stock feature to take his first ever win. Jon DeBoer was second and third went to Colter Deutsch, who had started ninth. Bob Deboer came from fifteenth to take fourth and fifth place went to Denton Potter. Mark VandenTop, Derrick VanderBrink and Joe Schueller won the heat races for the Hobby Stocks.
