Baker Wins First of Year at Rapid Speedway
By Shawn Neisteadt
(July 18, 2003-Rock Rapids, IA) Lyle Howey III jumped from the pole position to the early race lead of the NMRA 360 Sprint feature Friday night at Rapid Speedway. Brian Baker shot from the second row into second place on the opening lap. The leaders ran into lap traffic six laps into the event, and that is when Baker made his move and took the lead entering turn one. Jody Rosenboom took third place one lap later as he overtook Kevin Flowers for the position.
Kevin Flowers had reclaimed the third spot by lap 12, but lost the spot as he spun in turn four. All other cars would avoid him and Flowers was able to restart at the tail of the field. Butch Hanssen moved into the top five on the restart, but the racing slowed again one lap later. This time it was Buck Wilson spinning in turn three.
Hanssen again moved up on the restart as he took third from Rosenboom. Two laps remained when Hanssen took second from Howey. Out front, Baker was untouchable as he took his first win of the year. Hanssen was second and third went to Howey. Dusty Zomer came from tenth to fourth and Rosenboom was fifth.
Randy Vander Weide led the entire distance of the Late Model Stock Car feature to give the Sioux Center native his seventh career win, but it was his first ever win in Late Model Stock Cars. David Kruger took second place. Mark DeBoer came from eleventh to third and Heath Warntjes finished fourth. Jason DeBoer crossed the line fifth.
Anthony Mann was able to come from the second row to the lead of the Sportsmen feature on the opening lap of the event. The rest of the field battling door to door allowed Mann to check out en route to his third win of the year. The race on the track was for second place between Rick Vander Weide and Mel Elsberry. Vander Weide held on for second and Elsberry finished third. Don Garritsen, Jr. was fourth and Chris Huisman was fifth.
Chris DeHaan was close to picking up his first feature win of his career one week earlier in Hobby Stock action. DeHaan led the entire distance up to the final corner. This week, he would never give up the top spot as DeHaan led all 12 laps to take his first ever win. Mark VandenTop was second and third went to Denton Potter. Billy Cowell was fourth and Shannon Van Wyk crossed the line fifth.
Rapid Speedway races again this Friday night.
