Howey takes Rapid Speedway win

(July 11, 2003) Lyle Howey III was the man to beat as he started on the pole position for Rapid Speedway's main event, the 18 lap NMRA sprint car feature. Howey jumped into the lead as the green flag waved. On the second lap of the race, Gordy Vogelaar took fourth from Johnn Cressman as they raced into turn one. The third lap saw Brent Vonk take second from Rob Danielson. The yellow flag waved on lap four when Danielson lost the handle of his car and spun in turn two. Cressman made contact with the spun car and the night was over for both young drivers.
The battle for fifth heated up on the restart as Dusty Zomer and Mike Sandvig battled for the position. Zomer took fifth on lap five, but Sandvig reclaimed the position on lap 6.
All the racing was behind the race leader as Howey held on for the win. Vonk took second and third went to Vogelaar. Zomer finished fourth and Micah Schliemann made a late race surge to come from fifteenth to fifth.
Mark VanVoorst held the early lead of the Late Model Stock Car feature. Chad Overgaard took second from Randy VanderWeide on lap three as they entered turn three. Darrin Korthals made a nice move on lap four as he passed both Mark DeBoer and Jason DeBoer to take third place. The yellow flag waved on lap five when several cars tangled, but all were able to drive away.
Chad Overgaard was now the race leader, but his car sustained heavy damage on the front from the lap five incident. Ten laps had been counted when Korthals took second from VanVoorst and Mark DeBoer took third as well. The crowd came to its feet as the checkered flag was set to wave. Overgaard and Korthals raced off the final turn door to door and at the finish like it was Korthals picking up his fifth win of the year. Overgaard was second and Mark DeBoer was third. Doug Brinkhous was fourth and VanVoorst was fifth.
Chris Huisman led all 12 laps of the Sportsmen feature to take his first win of the year and first career win in the Sportsmen class. Mel Elsberry came from eighth to take second and third went to Rick VanderWeide. Don Gerritsen, Jr. was fourth and Jeff Hoogendoorn was fifth.
The final lap of the Hobby Stock feature was an exciting one as the top three cars made contact in the final turns. Driving off the turn and taking his first career win was the #16J of Jon DeBoer. Mark VandenTop came from fifteenth to second and Chris DeHaan was third across the line. Jason Faber took fourth and Denton Potter rounded out the top five.
Rapid Speedway races again this Friday night at 8 pm sharp.
