Hanssen grabs first win of Season for Big Pay at Rapid Speedway

(July 4, 2003-Rock Rapids, IA) Independence Day, a day to celebrate the birth of our great country, and for Rapid Speedway, it was a day for a special $1200 to win sprint car feature.
Shawn Van Wyhe jumped to the early lead of the sprint car 20 lap feature. Hanssen took second from the second row on the start. One lap into the race, Dusty Zomer moved into the top five. On lap three, Hanssen took the lead from Van Wyhe. Only five laps into the race, the leaders were in traffic. On lap six, Micah Schliemann moved into the top five as he passed Zomer. Entering turn three on lap seven, Schliemann took fourth from Randy Droescher and Dusty Ballenger took second from VanWyhe. On lap nine, Zomer and Droescher battled with Zomer taking fourth. By lap nine, Schliemann had moved into second as the leaders were buried in very dense lap traffic. On lap 12, Zomer took third from Ballenger. The only caution of the race was on lap 15 when Brent Vonk and Van Wyhe slowed on the track. Van Wyhe was able to restart while the night ended for Van Wyhe.
The restart came with five laps to go, but Hanssen was too fast to be stopped as his first win of the year was worth $1200. Schliemann came from eleventh to second and Ballenger finished third. Zomer was fourth and Droescher was fifth.
Mark Henry took the early lead of the Late Model Stock Car feature. Henry led until Mark DeBoer pulled door to door with him on lap four. On the fifth lap exiting the second turn, DeBoer took the top spot. DeBoer and Henry checked out from the rest of the field that battled wheel to wheel and door to door. DeBoer went on to take the win from the seventh starting position and his 99th overall career win. Henry was second and Jason DeBoer was third. Darrin Korthals was fourth and David Kruger took fifth.
Mel Elsberry took the lead of the Sportsmen feature on lap one when Chris Huisman slowed and fell out of the race. Elsberry led the rest of the distance for his second win of the week. Randy Brands was second and third went to Rick Vander Weide. Anthony Mann was fourth and Evan DeHaan was fifth.
Colter Deutsch continued his winning ways in the Hobby Stock class as he took the lead on lap two and led to the finish. Josh Klay was second and third went to Jon DeBoer. Denton Potter crossed the line fourth and fifth went to Billy Cowell.
Rapid Speedway races again on Friday night.
