Zomer Wins for First Time in a Sprint Car

(June 20, 2003-Rock Rapids, IA) It can only happen once in a career, and it happened for Dusty Zomer this past Friday night at the Rapid Speedway.
Zomer charged from the outside of the front row to the lead of the 18 lap Sprint Car feature. Four laps into the race, the second place changed hands as Randy Rosenboom moved around Rob Danielson in turn three. Exiting the second turn on lap 5, Ryan Bickett took third from Danielson. Six laps had been counted when a car spun in turn four. That car was able to continue on, however, Tom Platt stalled and brought out the caution.
Shawn Van Wyhe moved into fourth on the resulting restart. The yellow again waved on lap nine when several cars looped in turn four. Included in the incident were Jody Rosenboom, Chase Wilson, Mike Sandvig and Butch Hanssen.
Out front, Zomer was untouchable as he crossed the line first for his first career sprint car win. Randy Rosenboom and Bickett battled back and forth for second with Rosenboom crossing the line in the runner-up spot. Bickett was third. Clint Garner came from sixteenth to take fourth and Van Wyhe rounded out the top five. Johnn Cressman won the "B." Zomer, Bickett, Hanssen and Platt won the heat races.
John DeGroot led the first 11 laps of the Late Model Stock Car feature. The lead then went to Darrin Korthals. Korthals, who had started ninth, led the final four laps for his second straight feature win. Chad Overgaard finished in second just inches ahead of DeGroot. Jason DeBoer was fourth and fifth went to Heath Warntjes. DeGroot and Overgaard won the heat races.
Jeff Hoogendoorn took the early lead of the Sportsmen feature. That lead lasted until Nick Beyenhof took the top spot on lap two. Beyenhof was looking to take his first ever win as he led the field to the white flag. Beyenhof continued to lead with less than a half lap remaining, but on the exit of the final turn, Randy Brands made the move of the race and charged to the checkereds. Brands scored the win followed by Beyenhof. Anthony Mann was third. Rick VanderWeide came from eighth to take fourth and fifth went to Mel Elsberry. VanderWeide and Chris Huisman won the heat races.
Mark VandenTop took the lead of the NMRA Hobby Stock feature with only three trips around the speedway remaining. VandenTop went on to park his #81 in victory lane for the third time this season. Bob DeBoer led the first eight laps but finished second. Third went to Denton Potter and fourth was Shannon Van Wyk. Chris DeHaan, the "B" feature winner, rounded out the top five. Heat race winners included Colter Deutsch, Bob DeBoer and Jon DeBoer.
Rapid Speedway races again this Friday night. Also, Rapid Speedway will be racing on July 4th with the sprint car feature paying $1200 to win.
