Bickett Survives Wild Night to win Rapid Speedway Sprints

(June 13, 2003-Rock Rapids, IA) When there is a full moon overhead and the date is Friday the 13th, even non-superstitious fans feel that a night could be wild. That is exactly what the action was Friday night at Rapid Speedway.
Dusty Zomer grabbed the early lead of the 360 Sprint feature. The red waved with one lap down for a terrible looking crash on the backstretch. Kevin Flowers jumped the right rear tire of Gordy Vogelaar. The touch sent Flowers tumbling high into the air before coming to a stop off turn three. Flowers walked away from the incident but his #42 was completely destroyed. During the break, Zomer took his #1 to the infield for work and was sent to the back for the restart. However the crew never got the problem worked out and Zomer retired soon after the restart.
The lead was now in the hands of Ryan Bickett. Bickett took the green and started pulling away from the field. Butch Hanssen was charging forward on moved into the top five on lap two. On the third lap, Shawn Van Wyhe spun while running second. The looped car sat in the center of turn four with the rest of the field charging at it. Most of the field parted and made their way around the #99, except Hanssen who just kissed a tire of the stall machine. That sent Hanssen barrel rolling down the front stretch. Both drivers walked away unharmed.
The rest of the race went incident free, and Bickett led the distance for his second win of the season. Randy Rosenboom was second and third went to Jody Rosenboom. Johnn Cressman came from twelfth to take fourth and fifth went to Mike Sandvig. "It was a race of the first corner," said Bickett after the win. "This is a track to learn on." The "B" feature was won by Casey Abbas. Bickett, Jody Rosenboom and Brent Vonk won the heat races.
The fan favorite race of the night was the Late Model Stock Car feature. Darrin Korthals and Mark DeBoer both started in the fifth row. They found themselves in the front two spots only six laps into the race. On the tenth lap, business picked up. DeBoer ducked to the inside of Korthals and they ran side by side for the lead. The cars were door to door for the majority of the last five laps. When the checkered flew, it was Korthals just ahead of DeBoer for the win. DeBoer was second and third went to Scott Overgaard. Jason DeBoer was fourth and David Kruger was fifth. John DeGroot and Randy Vander Weide won the heat races.
Anthony Mann led flag to flag for his second win on a row in the Sportsmen class. Evan DeHaan came from the third row to take second and third went to Rick Vander Weide who started seventh. Mel Elsberry was fourth and fifth went to Randy Brands. Mann and Chris Huisman won the heat races.
Jon DeBoer led the first nine laps of the Hobby Stock feature, but it was Mark VanDenTop taking the lead at that point. The defending champion led the remainder of the race for his second win of 2003. Denton Potter took second and third was DeBoer. Billy Cowell was fourth and fifth went to Dereck VanderBrink. Bob DeBoer was the winner of the "B" feature. VanDenTop, Potter, and Colter Deutsch won the heat races.
Rapid Speedway races again this Friday night. Rapid Speedway will also be racing on July 4th with the Sprint Car feature paying $1200 to win.
