Jody Rosenboom claims first ever sprint car win

(May 30, 2003-Rock Rapids, IA) Joe Riedel jumped from the pole position to the lead of the NMRA 360 Sprint feature as the green flag fell. Riedel held the lead for one lap. Entering the first turn, Jody Rosenboom muscled around Riedel for the top spot. On the second lap, Gordy Vogelaar passed Casey Abbas for third and Ryan Bickett also moved forward and into the fourth spot. Four laps into the race, Shawn Van Wyhe spun to bring out the first caution of the 18 lap race.
On the restart, Dusty Ballenger moved into fourth and Butch Hanssen took over fifth. Vogelaar took over the second spot on lap five and Ballenger went three wide to take third. The yellow again waved on lap six when Tim Krueger spun in turn two. The restart was good for Hanssen as he took fourth from Riedel and Ballenger took ever the second position from Vogelaar. The yellow flag waved when Brent Vonk slowed on lap eight and again for Tim Krueger on lap 10.
The racing was still hot as the laps ticked away. Riedel and Lyle Howey III battled back and forth for fifth while deeper in the field Tom Platt was making a charge. Out front, Ballenger was threatening Rosenboom for the top spot. The threat ended when mechanical problems set in on Ballenger's #2D and he slowed on the track.
The field bunched up behind Rosenboom, but the rookie would hold on for his first ever win in sprint car competition. Vogelaar took second and Hanssen was third. Howey finished fourth and Platt took fifth. "There really are no words for it. It's just awesome," said Rosenboom after the win. Rosenboom, Vogelaar and Johnn Cressman won the heat races. The "B" feature was won by Chase Wilson.
Rick Goth took the lead of the Late Model Stock Car feature on lap three and led the final 12 laps to take his first win in the class at Rapid Speedway. Chad Overgaard started ninth and charged forward to take second. Mark DeBoer came from tenth to take third. Darrin Korthals came from the back after an opening lap incident to cross the stripe fourth and Mark Henry rounded out the top five. DeBoer and Henry won the heat races.
Rick Vander Weide and Randy Brands battled back and fourth for the lead in the closing laps of the Sportsmen feature. As the two entered the final set of turns, Vander Weide dove to the inside of Brands. The two made slight contact, but it was enough for Anthony Mann to maneuver from third to the win in only a quarter of a lap. Vander Weide was second to the line followed by Brands. Kevin Broesder was fourth and taking fifth was Evan DeHaan. Mann and Mel Elsberry were victorious in the heat races.
Dereck Vander Brink took his first win since the year 2000 by capturing the checkered of the Hobby Stock feature. Colter Deutsch was second and third went to Chris DeHaan. Finishing fourth was Billy Cowell and Denton Potter took fifth. Cowell and Shaun Jurrens were the heat race winners.
