Cressman takes win at Rapid Speedway

(May 16, 2003-Rock Rapids, IA) After suffering a rainout the week before, Rapids Speedway opened its gates for racing action once again. Cars and fans both poured into the speedway.
The night started with 27 NMRA 360 Sprint Cars checked in. After four heat races and a B feature, the 18 car field was set for the 18 lap main event. On the original start, Mike Sandvig and Shawn Van Wyhe banged together in turn one. Sandvig was able to drive away from the incident by Van Wyhe's #99 suffered damaged to the breaks and his night was over.
The field again took the green and it was Johnn Cressman jumping into the lead. The caution again waved on lap three when pole-sitter Chase Wilson spun and collected Mitch Runge. Both drivers were done for the evening.
Cressman was untouchable as he took the win by driving flawlessly through lap traffic. Lyle Howey III finished second. Dusty Ballenger made a pass on the last lap to take third and Brock Dump was fourth. Butch Hanssen also made a pass on the white flag lap to finish fifth from his fifteenth starting position.
Cressman, Ballenger, Ryan Bickett and Jim Smith won the heat races. Randy Roosenboom took the checkered in the B feature.
Howaard Baartman took the early lead of the Late Model Stock Car feature. That lead lasted until lap four when Darrin Korthals overtook the top spot. The pass was all that he needed as Korthals went on to take his 20th Late Model Stock Car win at Rapid Speedway. Baartman held on for second. Mark DeBoer held off a hard charging John DeGroot for third. Chad Overgaard crossed the line fifth. Baartman and Korthals were winners in heat race action.
Three cars battled for the lead in the closing laps of the Sportsmen feature. Randy Brands led the race from a restart with one lap down, but with the laps winding down was being challenged by Rick VanderWeide and Mel Elsberry. Coming for the checkered the three cars fanned out three wide, but Brands was able to hold on for the win. VanderWiede was second and Elsberry settled for third. Fourth place went to Evan DeHaan and Daryl Reverts came from tenth to take fifth. Brands and Elsberry won the heat races.
Billy Cowell led every lap of the NMRA Hobby Stock feature to take his first career win. Colter Deutsch survived some early race incident and finished second. Shaun Jurrens was third followed by Denton Potter and Troy Woelber. The race was yellow flagged when three cars tangled on lap five. During the caution Josh Klay's #28x had a small fire under the hood. The track's fire crew quickly extinguished the flare and nobody was injured. Hobby Stock heat race wins went to Klay, Jurrens and Shannon Van Wyk. Jason Faber took the win in B feature action.
