Wilson Family Reigns at Rapid Speedway Season Championship

(September 6, 2002-Rock Rapids, IA) Chase Wilson jumped off the pole position to the lead of the Sprint Car feature at the drop of the green. Wilson led until Dusty Ballenger took the spot on lap four.
Ballenger immediately began to distance himself from the field and continued to do so as he entered slower traffic on lap seven. On the fourteenth lap, luck changed for Ballenger as his engine went up in smoke on the front stretch. That gave the lead back to Wilson.
Wilson held off a hard charging Gordy Vogelaar to take the first Rapid Speedway victory of his career. Vogelaar came from fourteenth to second. Third went to Shawn Van Wyhe. Buck Wilson, father of Chase, finished fourth and clinched the point championship. Randy Rosenboom rounded out the top five.
It took five laps for Darrin Korthals to charge from eighth to the lead of the Short Track Stock feature. Korthals led the remaining 10 laps to clinch the championship and his eighth win of the year. The victory was also the fiftieth of his career. Heath Warntjes finished second and Mark Van Voorst was third. Mark Henry crossed the line fourth and fifth place went to Brad Klaassen.
Several cars got together on the opening lap of the Sportsmen feature. Glenn Wynia and Rick Vander Weide flipped their cars, but walked away uninjured. Anthony Mann led the races opening four laps until his engine lost power on lap four. That gave the lead to Todd Huisman and he would lead the rest of the race to take his second win of the year. Jason Grant was second and third went to Evan DeHaan. Fourth place went to Gary Mulder and Scott Overgaard finished fifth and was crowned 2002 point champion.
Colter Deutsch picked up his first Rapid Speedway win of the year and led seven laps to do so. Darwin Klaassen was second and Bob DeBoer was third. Chris DeHaan was fourth and Mark VandenTop finished fifth and was named Hobby Stock point champion.
Darlo Mulder took the win in the special Hobby Stock mechanics race. Jay Masur took the win in the Sportsmen race. Darin DeBoer won the Short Track Stock Car mechanics race and Amy Vander Weide won the Women on Wheels race.
