Cressman Takes Rapid Speedway Victory

(August 30, 2002-Rock Rapids, IA) Dusty Ballenger jumped from the pole into the lead of the sprint car "A" feature as the field took the green. Four laps into the race, Johnn Cressman moved around Shawn Van Wyhe and into the second place. The yellow flag waved on lap five when Brent Vonk's #21v ignited in flames. The fire put itself out and Vonk was unharmed.
One lap after the restart, Gordy Vogelaar passed Randy Droescher for fourth place. The fourth place changed hands again on lap 11 when Tom Platt went by Vogelaar for the position.
The battle for the lead heated up on lap 12 when Cressman had closed to the rear bumper of Ballenger. On lap 13, Cressman dove to the bottom of turn one and as a result grabbed the lead. Cressman led the remaining five laps to take the victory. Ballenger was second and Van Wyhe crossed the line third. Platt scored the fourth place finish and Clint Garner used a last lap move to round out the top five.
Randy Vander Weide grabbed the early lead of the short track stock car feature. With one lap counted, Darrin Korthals had already moved from seventh to fifth. On lap two, Korthals went around Jason DeBoer for fourth. On the next circuit of the speedway, John DeGroot lost third to Korthals. On the fourth lap, Korthals and Mark Henry began to battle for second place. Korthals grabbed the spot and set his sights on the lead.
Vander Weide and the lead came under fire on lap five when Korthals pulled door to door. Henry was also able to make a move and the three cars battled three wide for the top spot. Korthals held the best line off turn four and drove into the lead. Korthals led the final 10 laps to take his seventh win of the season and lock up his third Rapid Speedway point title. Henry inched out a hard charging Doug Brinkhous for second. DeBoer was fourth and DeGroot finished fifth.
Gary Mulder grabbed the lead of the Sportsmen feature at the drop of the green and held it for one lap until Jeff Hoogendoorn took the spot. Hoogendoorn held the lead until Mel Elsberry grabbed in entering turn one on lap two. Elsberry would hold on to take the win followed by Anthony Mann. Rick Vander Weide finished third and Evan DeHaan crossed the line fourth. Scott Overgaard rounded out the top five.
Bob DeBoer led the entire distance of the Hobby Stock feature to pick up his Rapid Speedway win in a hobby stock. Second went to Colter Deutsch and Darwin Klaassen was third. James Brower finished fourth Mark Vanden Top rounded out the top five.
