(July 12, 2002-Rock Rapids, IA) One week after taking second place in the main event, Clint Garner would return to the winner's circle by taking the 360 Sprint Car feature win.
Mike McMahan took the lead of the sprint car feature as the green flag dropped on the main event. Garner, who had started sixth, took second place from Brian Baker on the third trip around the speedway. The leaders were already into lap traffic when the yellow flag waved for a slowing car on lap three.
Less than one lap after the restart, Garner took the lead from McMahan. Last week's feature winner, Johnn Cressman passed Baker for third place on lap four. Cressman took the second place on lap nine when he passed McMahan on the exit of turn two. Buck Wilson was advancing in position on lap nine when his son, Chase Wilson spun in turn two.
Buck Wilson, the current Rapid Speedway point leader, would be discouraged as he took two spots on the restart to move into third. On lap 15, Wilson had reeled in Cressman and the two ran side by side for second place until Wilson slipped off turn four.
Out front Garner and his D&G Concrete #17v was untouchable as he picked up his fifth win of the season. Cressman would hold of Buck Wilson for second. McMahan came to the line fourth and Shawn Van Wyhe used a last lap pass to edge Baker out of the top five. The heat races were won by McMahan, Van Wyhe, and Randy Droescher.
Chad Overgaard held the early lead of the Short Track Stock Car feature until he slipped off turn one with one lap completed. That gave the lead to Jason DeBoer. The fourth lap around the speedway saw Mark DeBoer take second from Doug Brinkhous. One lap later, Darrin Korthals took third from Brinkhous.
After racing door to door for several laps, Mark DeBoer would edge into the lead in front of Jason DeBoer as they exited turn two on lap eight. The races only caution waved with 12 laps down when John DeGroot spun in turn two. That restart is what Darrin Korthals needed to take second place.
The field would not be able to stop the three time and defending track champion, Mark DeBoer as he would go into victory lane. Korthals took second followed by Jason DeBoer. Randy Brands finished fourth and Mark Henry rounded out the top five. Mark DeBoer and Brinkhous won the heat races.
The crowd came to its feet with one lap to go in the Sportsmen "A" feature. Brad Klaassen had been leading since lap eight, but at the white flag Scott Overgaard had mounted a charge for the lead and the two cars ran side by side into the first turn. Klaassen would get the edge on that set of turns, but Overgaard would come back on the other end of the speedway to make it a drag race to the finish line. At the stripe, it was Klaassen taking the win by inches. Overgaard settled for second and Todd Huisman finished third. Anthony Mann came from thirteenth to take fourth and Jeff Hoogendoorn took fifth place. "I knew he was coming," said Klaassen after the victory. "I knew as long as I kept my momentum up he wasn't going to get around me." Overgaard, Hoogendoorn and Gary Mulder were all victorious in heat race action.
The lead of the Hobby Stock feature swapped hands three times in the first two laps of the event. On the third lap, Mark VandenTop had already passed six cars and moved into the lead. VandenTop would never look back en route to his third win of the season. James Brower took second place and Colter Deutsch finished third. Fourth place went to Darwin Klaassen and Chris DeHaan finished fifth. The Hobby Stock heat races were won by DeHaan, Shaun Jurrens and Don Gerritsen Jr.
