(Rock Rapids, IA-June 28, 2002) One week after taking a wild ride, Shawn Van Wyhe return to Rapid Speedway and capped the night off in victory lane.
As the green flag dropped on the 18 lap 360 Sprint Car feature, Van Wyhe took the lead from fellow front row starter, Johnn Cressman. Three laps had been completed when Mike Sandvig took the second position away from Cressman. One lap later, Cressman fell victim to Gordy Vogelaar as the Select Motors #75 moved into third.
Van Wyhe continued to lead as the front runners ran into lap traffic at the halfway point. The caution waved one lap later when the engine on the #42B of Brandon Buysse expired.
Van Wyhe was untouchable as he led the entire distance to park his Nygaard Chassis #99 in victory lane for the first time this year. Sandvig finished second followed by Vogelaar. Buck Wilson finished fourth with Tom Platt coming from the tenth to take fifth. The sprint car heat races went to Randy Droescher and Brian Baker.
Chad Overgaard took the lead of the Short Track Stock Car feature as the field took the green. Doug Brinkhous took second place on lap three as he passed Jason DeBoer. One lap later, DeBoer lost third place to Darrin Korthals exiting the fourth turn. The field was working lap five when Mark DeBoer moved into the forth spot.
Six laps were in the books when Korthals continued his charge to the front by taking the second place from Brinkhous. On the ninth trip around the speedway, Mark DeBoer took third from Brinkhous and Korthals maneuvered around Overgaard and into the lead.
Korthals led the final six laps to park his Ahrendt Farms #11K in the winner's circle once again. Overgaard took second with Mark DeBoer taking third. Randy Brands finished fourth followed by Jason DeBoer. The Short Track Stock Car heat races were won by Mark DeBoer and Mark Henry.
Rick Vander Weide took the lead of the Sportsmen "A" feature from Scott Overgaard entering the third turn with one lap counted. Vander Weide was untouchable as he took the win to celebrate his birthday. "I didn't drive a good heat race," said Vander Weide, the PC Doctor #6 pilot, after the race. He continued, "I knew to win the feature I had to be smooth on the gas. I don't think I ever opened it up all the way." This was the third victory of the season for the defending track champion.
Overgaard held on to take runner-up honors. Brad Klaassen challenged for second several times, but would cross the line third. Mel Elsberry finished fourth. Todd Huisman rounded out the top five. Overgaard and Klaassen won the Sportsmen heat races.
Darwin Klaassen took the top spot of the Hobby Stock feature on a restart two laps into the race. Klaassen would hold on to take home his fourth trophy of the year. Dereck Van Der Brink led the opening two laps and finished second. The third place went to Colter Deutsch and Mark Van Den Top took fourth. Bob DeBoer rounded out the top five. The heat races were won by James Brower, Nick Bahr and Don Gerritsen.
