(Rock Rapids, IA-June 14, 2002) One week after taking his first win of the season, Brian Baker returned to victory lane.
Baker took the lead from the pole position at the drop of the green flag for the NMRA 360 Sprint Car feature. On the third circuit of the speedway, Shawn Van Wyhe moved into the third position with Gordy Vogelaar moving ahead and into fourth. Joe Riedel fell victim to Johnn Cressman on lap four as Cressman moved his Ford powered #56 into the top five. Five laps had been completed when Mike McMahan spun the Citywide Insulation #R19 in the first turn. McMahan was able to restart the machine and tag the rear of the field.
On the resulting restart, Cressman took fourth when he passed Van Whye. Exiting turn two on the sixth lap, Vogelaar took the runner up position from Mike Sandvig. Ten laps had been completed when the caution lights lit up again. This time Chase Wilson had spun his #3c in the first turn. Dale Lindberg and McMahan also spun out in the incident.
Three laps after the caution, Van Wyhe took fourth back from Cressman. Butch Hanssen, who had started last, took fifth place from Cressman on lap 14. On the next lap, Cressman brought out the caution when he spun in the first turn.
The field restarted, but Baker was untouchable in the green-white-checkered shootout. Vogelaar took second followed by Sandvig. Hanssen took fourth with Van Wyhe in fifth. "You get a couple of wins and it really pumps you up," said Baker, driver of the Turf Pros #25 after taking his second feature win in a row. "Our goal for the year was to win one," added Baker. Randy Droescher won the "B" feature. Heat race wins went to Van Wyhe, Sandvig, and Cressman.
Mark Van Voorst took the early lead of the Short Track Stock Car feature. With one lap down, Darrin Korthals brought out the caution when he spun his #11K on the front stretch. Mark Henry moved by Heath Warntjes on the restart for the second position. Mark DeBoer followed suit and took third on the restart. On the second lap of the 15 lapper, Henry took the lead. On the third lap, DeBoer took the lead from Henry as they entered the third turn.
Five laps had been counted when Randy Brands moved by Henry and took the second spot. With six laps to go, Brands passed DeBoer for the lead. DeBoer battled back and reclaimed the lead, but one lap later, Brands reclaimed the lead and he would never look back en route to his third win of the year. DeBoer finished second with Korthals charging back and using a last lap pass to take third. Doug Brinkhous finished fourth in his brand new car. Chad Overgaard rounded out the top five.
Mel Elsberry was the first car over the finish line in the Sportsmen feature, but he was claimed. Elsberry refused the claim resulting in a disqualification. Evan DeHaan was proclaimed the feature winner. Second place went to Rick Vander Weide. Scott Overgaard finished third with Brad Klaassen fourth. Glenn Wynia rounded out the top five. DeHaan, Vander Weide and Brad Haas to the heat race wins.
Sixteen year old, Don Gerritsen, Jr. led all 12 laps of the NMRA Hobby Stock feature to take his first career win. Larry Kracht finished a close second. Denton Potter finished third followed by James Brower and Colter Deutsch. The "B" feature was won by Darwin Klaassen. The heat races were won by Kracht, Potter and Brower.
