(Rock Rapids, IA-- May 10, 2002) With temperatures only in the 50 degree range, fans and race teams alike braved the cool weather. For taking to the chilly outdoors, they would be treated with red hot racing action.
Randy Droescher and Mike Sandvig led the NMRA 360 Sprint Cars to the start of the 18 lap main event. Droescher claimed control of the lead position as the field took to turn one on the opening lap. The race went green for three laps until Shawn Van Wyhe spun his #99 in the fourth turn. Van Whye would turn the car to the right direction and restart at the tail of the field.
On the ensuing restart, Sandvig, a sophomore season driver, swiped the lead from Droescher, the seasoned 31 year veteran, as they hit the first turn. After working his way from the fourth row, Clint Garner lost the third position on lap five as he slid high and over the lip of turn two. Garner lost several positions, but stood on the gas and reclaimed a top five spot on the following lap.
On lap seven, Garner continued his march to the front by taking fourth from Johnn Cressman exiting turn four. Exactly one lap later, Gordy Vogelaar fell victim to Garner as the #17v moved into third. It would take two more laps before Droescher would lose the battle for second the charging Garner.
Meanwhile, out front, Sandvig continued to lead. That would change as he ran into lap traffic on the eleventh circuit. Garner slices his way into the lead, but he red flag would wave before the lap could be completed. Vogelaar flipped his Summer Racing Group #75 entering turn three. Vogelaar walked away uninjured.
Sandvig led the field to the restart, but Garner pulled into the lead as the 13th lap went into the books. Garner held on to take his second win of the season. Micah Schliemann finished strong bringing his #9 to the finish in second. Sandvig finished third followed by Droescher and Buck Wilson.
Heat races were won by Garner, Tom Platt and Dusty Ballenger.
It took two laps for Darrin Korthals to go from tenth to the lead of the Short Track Stock Car feature. Hopes for a win ended as the #11K stalled during a caution period six laps into the race. Korthals not only gave up the lead, but the electrical problems also forced him into early retirement for the evening.
Randy Brands inherited the lead and held on to put the Jetset Enterprise #27 into victory lane. Divisional rookie, Rick Goth finished a strong second with Jason DeBoer in third. Doug Brinkhous and Chad Overgaard rounded out the top five. Korthals and Goth won the heat races.
Glenn Wynia led the opening nine laps of the Sportsmen Stock Car feature, but would lose the spot while spinning out exiting turn two. Anthony Mann came to the lap nine restart in fourth, but didn't stay there for long. Mann maneuvered into second at the drop of the green and dove under Gary Mulder in turn two. Mulder and Mann held a drag race down the back stretch, but Mann claimed the top spot entering turn three. Mann led the remaining tow laps to give him his first career Sportsmen division victory. Mulder finished second. Evan DeHaan finished third. Brad Klaassen came from tenth to take third. Fifth went to Brad Haas. Mann, Klaassen, and Haas won the heat races.
James Brower led the NMRA Hobby Stock feature from the drop of the green flag until exiting turn four for the checkereds. Brower's #80 broke loose and spun around. Darwin Klaassen led the final eighth of a lap to take his second consecutive win. Second went to Bob DeBoer with Chris DeHaan taking third. Colter Deutsch finished fourth and fifth went to Adam Thielbar. Heat race wins went to DeBoer, Klaassen, Brower and DeHaan. The first "B" feature went to Tim Dann. Matt Hagedorn took the honors in the second "B" feature.
