Garner gains Rapid Speedway victory

By Shawn Neisteadt

Rock Rapids, IA-Driving the CR Motorsports #17v, Clint Garner picked up his first Rapid Speedway victory of the season on his first appearance at the track for the year. Garner started on the pole position and assumed the lead as the green flag dropped on the 16-lap NMRA 360 sprint feature, but the yellow flag came out before one lap was completed as Doug Martens spun out entering turn three.  When the field restarted, again Garner claimed the top spot. On the seventh lap of the event, traffic became an issue for the leaders, but Garner would maneuver his way through them with ease to run to the victory.  Second place went to Shawn Van Whye, driving the car Kenny Jacobs used to win the 1995 Kings Royal.  Randy Droescher came from sixth to finish just behind Van Whye.  Mike McMahan finished fourth with Todd Wessels rounding out the top five. Heat race wins went to Garner, Van Whye, and Wessels.

David Kruger took the early lead of the Late Model Stock Car feature, but would not be able to open up the lead as three caution flags waved in the opening four laps.  With the cautions out of the way, racing action heated up on the fifth lap.  Kruger would have his lead challenged by Chad Overgaard, who had come from the seventh starting position.  As the two lead cars exited turn two on the sixth lap, Overgaard would make the pass and take the lead. Mark DeBoer had charged from the tenth starting spot and moved into second on the front stretch. DeBoer would race door to door with Overgaard until taking the lead on the twelfth circuit around the speedway.  DeBoer led the remaining three laps to claim his to put the Countryside Inn #23 into victory lane for the third time this season.  Overgaard finished second with Dale Furby in third.  Darrin Korthals started ninth and finished fourth and Doug Brinkhous finished fifth. "I knew I had a good chance if I kept it on the bottom," said DeBoer on the side by side racing with Overgaard.  "I just wanted to keep it clean." DeBoer, Furby, and Korthals claimed heat race wins.

"It was fun.  I had a blast," said Randy Vander Weide after leading all 12 laps of the Sportsmen feature to claim his first win of the season.  The win couldn't have come on a better night, as he and his wife were celebrating their 22nd anniversary.  "It makes the 22nd one memorable," he added. Following the Sioux Center Aviation car of Vander Weide to the line was Brad Klaassen.  Brad Haas finished third.  Mel Elsberry came from the eighth starting position to finish fourth.  Rick Vander Weide finished fifth. Heat race wins went to Don Grems and Scott Overgaard.

Jason Vande Vegte picked up his second NMRA Hobby Stock feature win of the season by leading all 12 laps of the feature.  Jeff Hoogendoorn finished second.  Jeremy Franken finished third.  Anthony Mann and James Brower rounded out the top five. Larry Kracht, Dereck Van Der Brink, and Hoogendoorn won the heat races.  James Slawson won the first "B" feature and Tammy Kracht won the other.
