The Iceman is on fire:  Droescher claims his second win in a row

By Shawn Neisteadt

Rock Rapids, IA-- Joe Riedel and Rick Adams led the field of NMRA 360 sprints to the green, but the red flag waved when Mitch Runge flipped and collected Blaine Foreman.  Both drivers walked away uninjured, but had to call it a night before completing a lap. The field made a complete restart, and this time, Riedel put the Duffy Farms car into the lead.  Randy Droescher was following in second when the yellow flag waved for Eric McGillivray, who had spun in the first turn. The lap four restart saw Droescher pull his Ethanol Products car past Riedel and pull away.  The Iceman held on for the remaining 14 laps of the event to claim his second Rapid Speedway victory in a row.  Riedel claimed his best ever Rapid Speedway finish with his second place showing.  Jim Smith finished third with Tom Platt and Shawn Van Whye rounding out the top five. "I feel good," commented Droescher after the win.  "It's my wife's birthday today, so we had to win." Riedel, Platt, and Van Whye claimed heat race victories.

The Late Model Stock Car feature had to be yellow flagged with only one lap completed when five cars tangled in turn one.  Doug Brinkhous had claimed the lead and led the field to the restart.  Mark DeBoer overtook Darrin Korthals on the restart and Randy Brands one lap later to possess the second position.  Korthals soon mounted a charge and pulled into third. On lap six, DeBoer passed Brinkhous, but all was not said and done as Brinkhous reclaimed the lead in turn four.  Brinkhous held off the remaining charges of DeBoer to take his second win of the season.  DeBoer came to the line second followed by Korthals.  Randy Brands finished fourth with Chad Overgaaard just behind him. Heat race wins went to Brinkhous and Mark Henry.

Evan DeHaan took the lead of the Sportsmen main event on a lap one restart, and never looked back to claim his first victory of the season.  Rick Vander Weide came back from a lap one incident, in which his right front wheel was on top of another car's hood, to claim second with the Jubilee Foods car.  Mel Elsberry mounted several charges, but settled for third place.  Brad Klaassen and Billy Sprock rounded out the top five. "I just tried to hold my line so I didn't goof up," said DeHaan, driver of the Siouxland Machine #7x.  The win was the fourth career sportsmen victory for DeHaan, but winning isn't new to him; he was the 1996 Hobby Stock track champion. DeHaan and Klaassen claimed the heat races.

James Brower led every lap of the NMRA Hobby Stock feature to claim his first ever win.  "I kept on the gas and drove smooth in the corners," said Brower after the race.  "I picked a different line in the corners and it paid off. Darwin Klaassen started tenth and came up to second.  Mark Vanden Top came from the last row to finish third.  Jeremy Franken and James Slawson finished with top five honors. Slawson, Chris DeHaan, and Anthony Mann won the heat races.  Tammy Kracht won the "B" feature.
