It looked like it was going to be another one of those nights for Buck Wilson. Wilson, who’s missed a number of races this year at Rapid Speedway due to mechanical woes, shot into the lead at the start of the 18-lap sprint car feature Friday night and quickly pulled away from the field. But as Wilson looked to have the field covered, his motor began to sour, which became more noticable each circuit he completed. However, tonight his luck would hold. The track, which became dry-slick as the race progressed, worked in Wilson’s favor, taking away the horsepower advantage that the other drivers held over him. The two main things that could take the win away from Wilson - a blown motor or a restart - never materialized and Wilson went on to win his first feature ever at the track. Rookie Kevin Burd scored his best finish at the track by taking second followed by Bill Fredin, Troy Meyer and Micah Schliemann.
Rookie Doug Brinkhouse continued his amazing run in the late model stock cars as he won his division-leading fourth feature event of the year. Brinkhouse passed race-long leader Gus Clark with two laps to go and went unchallenged the rest of the way for the win. Chad Overgaard was second while point-leader Mark DeBoer came from the fifth row to take third ahead of Clark.
Brad Klaassen showed why he holds a large lead in the sportsmen’s point race as he came from the sixth row to win his fifth feature of the year. Second went to early leader Randy Vander Weide, followed by Larry Kracht, Rick Goth and Greg Roemen.
Mike Deutsch took the lead on lap two and went on to win his third hobby stock feature of the year. Deutsch, the only driver in the class to win more than one feature, was followed at the finish by Robert Norem, Kirk Maasdam, point leader Darwin Klaassen and Mark Vanden Top. David Bosma, who was second in the points chase going into the evening’s action, blew a right rear tire late in the race, putting his car on its top in the only red-flag incident during the evening. Bosma was uninjured.
