Chad Meyer was clearly the class of the field as he rocketed to the sprint car feature win in racing action Friday night at Rapid Speedway. Meyer moved from his fourth row starting spot to fourth place on lap five when the caution flew when Gordy Vogelaars car made contact with another machine and suffered front end damage. Meyer, who trailed leader Tom Platt, Shawn Van Wyhe and Bill Fredin on the restart, methodically passed one car per lap as the race resumed, taking the lead on lap seven of the eighteen lap event. Meyer quickly opened a sizable lead and, in spite of several restarts, pulled away each time to take an easy win. Following a restart with two laps to go, Randy Droescher’s machine jumped the wheel of another car and flipped in the fourth turn. Droescher was uninjured. Meyer’s win came in spite of a damaged nose wing that he sported throughout most of the event, which his crew eventually removed during the red for Droescher’s ncident. Van Wyhe finished second ahead of Fredin, Lee Goos and Troy Meyer.
Doug Brinkhouse led all the way to score his third late model stock car feature win. Brinkhouse’s win failed to come easy, as Pat Connell came from the third row to challenge Brinkhouse in the final laps. Connell was able to pull alongside Brinkhouse coming out of the final turn, but came up just three feet short at the finish. Third went to Dale Furby, followed by Mark DeBoer and Mark Henry.
The sportsmen feature saw Perry Klosterbuer take the win. Klosterbuer won by four car lengths over runner-up Jeff Wittrock. Brad Haas was third followed by point-leader Brad Klaassen and Terry Dieren, who was subbing for Brian McKee. Klosterbuer’s win was his first feature victory at the track since 1985.
Robert Norem captured the hobby stock feature, becoming the eighth different driver in as many nights of racing to win a feature in the competitive class. Second went to Lyle DeVries, followed by Jeff Hoogendorn and Anthony Mann. Heath Warntjes, who led the point race going into the evening’s action, was found to have an illegal motor, moving Darwin Klaassen unofficially into the point lead.
Bob and Stan DeBoer padded their point lead in the cruisers with their fourth feature win of the year.
