Pekron Makes it Three in a Row Saturday Night
By Heather Riffel
(July 29, 2006-Madison, SD) Mitch Runge won his fourth Sprint feature of the season. Don Gerritsen Jr. was able to get his second trophy of the year in Late Model Stock Cars. Bret Mellenberndt picked up his fifth trophy in the Wingless Sprints. Nick Bahr scored his third win in the Sportsmen feature. Chad Graves also scored his third win of the year in Hobby Stocks. Rodney Cook got his first win in the Factory Stocks while Scott Pekron scored his third win in his third start in the Hornet feature.
Cory Krueger started on the outside pole and led the first eight laps of the Sprint feature. Mitch Runge battled with Jared Riedel for the third position on lap five and was able to move into the second position, getting by Randy Droescher, on lap seven. After a caution for Chuck McGillivray and Lane Brenden, Runge was able to get by Krueger for the lead. Runge led the remaining ten laps and took home the checkers. He was followed by Krueger in second which was his first top five finish. Droescher picked up third while Brenden came in fourth. Brad Nelsen rounded out the top five.
Gary Brown Jr. started on the pole and led the opening laps of the Late Model Stock Car feature. Don Gerritsen Jr. quickly moved up to take the lead on the third lap. Jesse Akkerman and Lee Schlumbohm were involved in a battle for fourth while Matt Steuerwald and Brown battled for second. Gerritsen started to smoke on the white flag lap but was able to hold it together and finish first. Brown took second while Steuerwald placed in third. Akkerman secured fourth over Schlumbohm.
Bret Mellenberndt led all eight laps of the Heartland Racing Association Wingless Sprint feature. He continued his domination at Lake County Speedway this year and picked up another win. He is now the point leader after Gerod Olivier failed to start the feature. John Kaiser finished in second. Jeff Davis took third while Bob Pingeon finished in fourth.
Kevin Spurgin and Jamie Tieszen battled for the top spot in the opening laps. Behind them Steve Eliason, Nick Bahr, and Brett Larsen battled for the third spot. Tieszen got into Spurgin on lap seven and sent him around in turn four. Tieszen was sent to the back and Spurgin remained in the first position. Bahr moved up and was able to get by Spurgin on lap nine. Bahr held on to lead the last four laps. Spurgin finished in second while Tieszen rebounded to finish in third. Larsen took fourth while Justin LeBahn ended up in fifth.
Chad Graves started on the pole and led all 12 laps of the Hobby Stock feature. Jared Nytroe moved up to battle with Travis Morris for the second position on lap three. Throughout the race Morris moved back to battle with Tony Guischer for the third spot and Aaron Penning for the fourth spot. Graves crossed the line first followed by Nytroe and Guischer. It was very close but Penning barely took the fourth spot from Morris.
Jeff Foster led the first four laps of the Factory Stock feature before the race became hampered by many cautions. The caution first came out for Doug Carsrud and Jim Klutman getting together in turn three. During that caution Rodney Cook and Larry Buckneberg got caught up turn one when Bucknebergs tire came off. Also during that caution Fosters driveshaft fell off. This gave the lead to Brandon Nytroe. Cook was able to get by Nytroe on the restart and led the remaining four laps. At the line it was very close but Cook held on for the win over Greg Pettersen. Tyler Hutchkiss finished in third while Klutman ended up in fourth. Ronnie Froke rounded out the top five.
Tyler Demers looked like he was going to walk away with the win in the Hornet feature. Scott Pekron worked his way up from the fourth starting position to battle for the lead with three laps remaining and on the last lap Pekron was able to take the lead and get to the checkers first. The only incident occurred on lap five when Chris Scholl flipped in turn two. David Sweet finished in third while Kyle Schulz finished in fourth. Lee Hein rounded out the top five.
