Brenden picks up first Sprint Car win Saturday Night

By Heather Riffel

(July 15, 2006-Madison, SD) The heat had been unbearable all weekend but that did not stop the drivers from putting on a great show Saturday night at Lake County Speedway. The big story of the night was Lane Brenden getting his first win in the Sprint feature. Lee Schlumbohm was able to get his second trophy of the year in Late Model Stock Cars. The point leader of the Wingless Sprints, Gerod Olivier, was able to pick up his first win of the year. Nick Bahr got his second win in a row in the Sportsmen feature. Chad Graves scored his second win of the year in Hobby Stocks. Jim Klutman got his first win this year in the Factory Stocks while Scott Pekron scored his first win in his first start in the Hornet feature.

Lane Brenden started on the outside pole and led all 18 laps of the Sprint Car feature on his way to his first win ever in this division. Behind him Mitch Runge and Brad Nelson were battling for second until Runge spun out on lap thirteen and finished outside the top five. This allowed Randy Droescher to battle for second. Nelson held onto second while Droescher finished in third. Chuck McGillivray finished in fourth while Daryl Reverts came in fifth.

Lee Schlumbohm, Don Gerritsen Jr., and Jesse Akkerman were three wide battling for the lead in the Late Model Stock Car feature. Schlumbohm was able to secure the lead for the first two laps before Akkerman made his way to the front. These three cars continued to battle lap after lap. Akkerman was able to hold onto the lead for seven laps. Schlumbohm was able to take the lead shortly before the caution came out for Akkerman’s car slowing on the track. Schlumbohm continued to battle with Gerritsen Jr. At the line it was a close finish but Schlumbohm held on. Gerritsen Jr. finished in second followed by Matt Steuerwald. Gary Brown Jr. came in fourth while Chris Ellingson got fifth.

Gerod Olivier started on the pole and led the first two laps of the Heartland Racing Association Wingless Sprint car feature. John Kaiser was able to move into the lead for two laps before Olivier reclaimed it and held onto it for the rest of the race. Doug Martens and Bret Mellenberndt were involved in a close battle for third. Mellenberndt moved up to challenge Kaiser for the second position. Olivier held on for the victory in this race that featured exciting close racing action. Kaiser finished in second while Mellenberndt came in third. Martens held onto the fourth spot while Willie Hasvold came in fifth.

Jon DeBoer led the first five laps of the Sportsmen feature. There were four cautions in this race that made the racing action even closer. Jamie Tieszen and Brett Larsen battled for the second position. Nick Bahr battled his way from the sixth starting position to take the lead on lap six. Kevin Spurgin and Tieszen were involved in a heated battle during the closing laps of the race for third position. Bahr held on to lead the last six laps and pick up back to back victories. DeBoer finished in second while Spurgin took the third spot. Larsen picked up the fourth position while Steve Eliason rounded out the top five.

Zeb Larsen looked like he was going to dominate the Hobby Stock feature. He led eleven laps the only lap he missed was the most important one, the last one. He battled for most of the race with Aaron Penning. It looked like it was going to be a two car race until Chad Graves came from the seventh starting position to second by lap ten. Graves was able to get by both Penning and Larsen and steal the victory on the last lap. Larsen finished in second and Penning in third. Tony Guischer placed in fourth while Jared Nytroe rounded out the top five.

Travis Christensen started on the pole and led the first four laps of the Factory Stock feature. The caution came out on lap five which bunched the field up and allowed Jim Klutman to get around Christensen on the restart. Klutman led the remaining three laps. Christensen held onto second while Dan Carsrud came in third. Greg Pettersen finished in fourth and Rodney Cook was in fifth.

The Hornet feature became a battle of whose car could hold on to the finish. On the first lap Nathan Rounds, Tyler Demers, and Brian Brody were all involved in an accident. Chris Scholl was leading the race until he slowed on the last lap which handed the race win to Scott Pekron. Josh Van Engen was the only other car still running after nine cars had started the feature.
