Repeat Winners Top Exciting Night at Lake County Speedway

By Heather Riffel

(July 8, 2006-Madison, SD) Saturday night was filled with the typical thrilling racing action that Lake County Speedway sees every weekend. There were a few drivers who continued their domination this season while others broke into the winner’s circle for the first time this year. The spirit of the night was dampened when a serious racing accident injured a competitor sending him to the hospital.

Cory Krueger started on the outside pole of the Sprint feature and took the early race lead. Behind him Jared Riedel, Lane Brenden, Mitch Runge, and Daryl Reverts all battled for the remaining top five positions. Krueger was enjoying a big race lead when he spun in the second turn bringing out the caution on lap seven. This handed the race lead to Brenden. Brenden continued to lead for three laps until Runge was able to take the lead on lap 10. Runge led the rest of the feature and was never challenged for the lead. The biggest battle behind him was between Reverts and Chuck McGillivray for the third position. This was Runge’s third win of the year. Brenden finished in second while McGillivray came in third. Reverts finished in fourth and Randy Droescher finished in the fifth position.

Don Gerritsen Jr. and Chad Overgaard battled all race for the lead in the Late Model Stock Car feature. It was a very close battle but both raced cleanly which allowed the crowd to see a great race between two talented drivers. Gerritsen was able to lead the first four laps while Overgaard was credited with the remaining laps. Chris Ellingson and Lee Schlumbohm battled for the third position but as the laps winded down Ellingson faded to finish in the sixth position. Overgaard picked up his first win of the year while Gerritsen finished in second. Schlumbohm took the third spot while Gary Brown Jr. finished in fourth. Scott Overgaard rounded out the top five.

Andy Anderson and Gerod Olivier battled for the early race lead in the Heartland Racing Association Wingless Sprint Car feature. Olivier won the battle and continued to lead the race. Bret Mellenberndt was able to move his way up and challenge for the race lead on lap seven. Olivier was tough and it did not look like Mellenberndt was going to be able to complete the pass but on the last lap he was able to get by Olivier. Mellenberndt picked up his fourth trophy of the year. He was followed by Olivier. Anderson finished in the third position while Doug Martens finished in fourth.

Nick Bahr started in the fifth position of the Sportsmen feature. He was able to take the lead on the first lap and he led all 12 laps. Bahr faced many challenges from Greg Roemen for the lead but Roemen did not have enough to get around Bahr. Bahr went on to win his first race of the season while Roemen finished in second. Kevin Spurgin took the third position while Jamie Tieszen finished in fourth. Steve Eliason finished in fifth.

Tony Guischer started on the outside pole and led all 12 laps of the Hobby Stock feature to win his first race of the season. Chad Graves moved from his sixth starting position to quickly battle with Todd Penning for the second position. Jared Nytroe started in the seventh position and moved up to battle with Graves and Nick Janssen for the second position on lap eight. The red flag came out with three laps remaining when Greg Brandt flipped his car on the frontstretch. In the remaining laps Graves battled it out with Guischer but Guischer was able to hold on. Graves captured the second spot while Nytroe finished in third. Zeb Larsen took home the fourth spot and Penning finished in fifth.

Dan Carsrud took the lead on the second lap of the Factory Stock feature and led the remaining seven laps. He picked up his sixth win of the year and his fifth in a row. He was never challenged for the race lead. Behind him Tyler Hutchkiss finished in second while Ronnie Froke finished in third. Greg Pettersen was in fourth while Matt Mortinsen rounded out the top five.

Chris Scholl took the lead on lap one after starting in the third position of the Hornet feature. He looked like he was going to win the race easily until he hit the wall on the last lap. This gave the win to Dustin Gulbranson which was his first of the year. Tyler Demers finished in second followed by Nathan Rounds, Josh Van Engen, and Matt Mortinsen.
