Scott Overgaard wins Todd Sterzinger Memorial Race
By Heather Riffel
(June 24, 2006-Madison, SD) Racing action returned to Lake County Speedway after two weeks off for Mother Nature. The night was packed with many great features and a special Late Model race to memorialize Todd Sterzinger at the end of the night. The night was very emotional for many in attendance and the racing action provided the audience with a great show. Scott Overgaard won the memorial race while Lee Schlumbohm took home the trophy in the Late Model feature. Joe Riedel picked up his first win this season in the Sprint Car feature. Other winners were Tyler Demers, Dan Carsrud, Zeb Larsen, Greg Roemen and Bret Mellenberndt.
The Sprint Car feature got off to a wild start when Mitch Runge rolled his car in the second turn which brought out the red flag. When the race finally got back underway Joe Riedel was able to move from fourth to first on the first lap. On lap five Chuck McGillivray had moved up to challenge Cody Hansen for the second position. The red flag came out again when Daryl Reverts put his sprint on its side. The rest of the race featured McGillivray and Hansen battling for second. Hansen held strong and the field spread out. At the line Riedel picked up his first win since 2004 after taking last year off to go to Iraq. Hansen came in second while McGillivray finished in third. Doug Martens came in fourth and Brent Vonk finished in fifth.
Brett Mellenberndt picked up right where he left off three weeks ago in the Heartland Racing Association Wingless Sprint Car feature. Mellenberndt started in the fifth position and took the lead from Dana Buttemeier on the third lap. This race was not as easy for Mellenberndt to win though. Buttermeier tried to use the low line while Andy Anderson tried the high line. Neither one of them was able to get around Mellenberndt though. Mellenberndt picked up his second win of the season followed by Buttermeier and Anderson. Gerod Olivier came in fourth while Brooks Castelluzzo rounded out the top five.
Greg Roemen led all the laps in a caution filled Sportsman feature. At the beginning of the race Kevin Spurgin and Brett Larsen were battling for second. After six cautions and a red flag Roemen was able to pick up the trophy. It was a rough night for Andy Gabrielson who was involved in the first caution and then flipped his car upside down a few laps later. The race ended up being finished under the caution flag. Following Roemen were Larsen, Jamie Tieszen, Nick Bahr, and Pete Kracht.
Zeb Larsen picked up another trophy in the Hobby Stock feature it was his first win at Lake County this season but definitely his first win of the year. He started on the outside pole and took the immediate lead and he never looked back. No one was able to challenge him for the lead. The closest anyone got was Aaron Penning but Penning was not able to do anything to get around Larsen. Finishing is third was Jared Nytroe while Travis Morris picked up the fourth position. Curtis Hansen rounded out the top five.
Even though Lee Schlumbohm led every lap in the Late Model Stock Car feature it was not an easy win for him. Scott Overgaard quickly moved to the front after starting sixth. He battled with Schlumbohm lap after lap. He just did not seem to have quite enough to make the pass. There was close racing throughout the top five. Gary Brown Jr. battled both Dale Furby and Matt Steuerwald for the fourth position. Steuerwald was able to capture the third position while Brown came in fourth. Furby finished in fifth.
Tyler Hutchkiss led the first two laps during the Factory Stock feature. There were two quick cautions for Brandon Nytroe and Jeff Foster. On the restart Dan Carsrud was able to get a run and make it into the top spot. He stayed there for the rest of the race which gave him his fourth win of the year. He was followed by Rodney Cook, Cory Yeigh, Travis Christensen, and Ronnie Froke.
Dustin Gulbranson led the first half of the Hornet feature. Tyler Demers moved to the front to challenge Gulbranson for the lead. Demers secured the top spot on lap four. He was able to pick up his first win ever. He was followed by Gulbranson, Chris Scholl, and Josh Van Engen.
The night was capped off by a 20 lap Late Model race to honor Todd Sterzinger. This was a very exciting race with good clean racing action from all of the competitors. Scott Overgaard came from the last starting position to move his way up to second by lap six. He and Don Gerritsen Jr. battled back and forth lap after lap. Gary Brown Jr. joined in the battle as well but Overgaard and Gerritsen were able to break away and continue their battle. It came down to the last lap with both cars side by side. Overgaard was able to capture the win. He was followed by Gerritsen, Brown, Lee Schlumbohm, and Matt Steuerwald. It was a great race to honor a great man.
