Wild Night of Events Saturday at Lake County Speedway

By Heather Riffel

(June 3, 2006-Madison, SD) Saturday night there was an unusual feeling in the air. The threat of rain caused the racing action to be cut down in laps for most feature events. The strangest part of the night had to be when the lights went out during the Hobby Stock feature event. All in all it was a good night of racing that was not lacking any excitement.

The 12 lap Sprint car feature had Brad Nelson on the pole. He continued to lead the first few laps. The second place car of Jared Riedel slowed on the first lap which allowed Mitch Runge to move up to second. Runge was almost to Nelson when the caution was brought out for Riedel slowing car. When racing resumed Runge was able to go to the low line and pass Nelson for the lead on lap six. Runge pulled away from the field to easily pick up the win. He was followed by Nelson, Lane Brenden, Daryl Reverts, and Chuck McGillivray.

The Late Model Stock Car feature had six cautions but Matt Steuerwald was still able to lead every lap. Steuerwald and Lee Schlumbohm were the early leaders. After three cautions in a row they were able to get back to green flag racing. Towards the end of the race there was a caution when Schlumbohm slowed on the track which was followed by another caution when Dale Furby spun on the track. The battle for the win was between Steuerwald and Gary Brown Jr. Brown was not able to overcome Steuerwald who crossed the line first. The third place car was Jesse Akkerman who was followed by Furby who came back from that spin at the end. The fifth place car was Chris Ellingson.

Brett Mellenberndt dominated the Heartland Racing Association Wingless Sprint Car feature. He led every lap after starting on the pole. The race for second was heated between Andy Anderson and Gerod Olivier. Olivier came away with second while Anderson finished third. They were followed by John Kaiser and Dana Buttemeier.

Nick Abraham started on the pole of the Sportsmen feature. He did not stay there long as Brett Larsen charged to the front and took the lead on lap two. Jamie Tieszen and Steve Eliason were also up in front battling it out for top five positions. Halfway through the race Tieszen was using the bottom of the track to try and take the lead from Larsen but Larsen was just too strong for anyone to get by. Nick Bahr moved his way up from a fourth starting position to take second from Tieszen. Tieszen ended up in third followed by Eliason and Abraham.

There was nothing uninteresting about the Hobby Stock feature event. Matt Scholl started on the pole and led the first four laps. Travis Morris and Tommy Barber battled it out for second right behind him. By lap five Scholl was slowing on the track which brought out a caution. That gave the lead to Morris and in second was Aaron Penning who had come from a seventh place starting spot. Penning, Curtis Hansen, and Zeb Larsen were three wide behind Morris. During the caution for Greg Brandt the lights unexpectedly went out. Fortunately the power was only off for a few seconds. The race was red-flagged for about a half-hour until the lights were back up to full power. When the race restarted the battle for the lead was still very heated. Penning was able to get by Larsen and Barber to battle it out with Morris. On the white flag lap Penning took the lead and held on to see the checkers. Coming to the finish Morris and Barber got together which caused both of them to finish outside the top five. The rest of the finishing order was Larsen taking second followed by Tony Guischer, Hansen, and Brandt.

Dan Carsrud led all the laps of the Factory Stock feature. He was challenged by Travis Christensen but was able to hold on for the victory. Those two cars were followed by Tyler Hutchkiss, Rodney Cook, and Ronnie Froke. This marked Carsrud second win in a row at Lake County Speedway.

Chris Scholl picked up another win at Lake County Speedway after winning last Saturday in the Hornets feature event. He took the lead on lap one. He was followed by Tyler DeMers, Matt Martinsen, Dustin Gulbranson, and Josh Van Engen.
