Heiman, Penning first time winners in an exciting night

By Heather Riffel

(May 27, 2006-Madison, SD) Lake County Speedway kicked off the summer with a great night of racing during the Memorial Day weekend. The temperature was hot and the racing was even hotter. Jordan Heiman and Todd Penning took their first feature wins ever. Heiman in the late model stock car event and Penning in the hobby stocks. Chuck McGillivray made it back to back wins in the 360 sprints. Andy Anderson, Jamie Tieszen, Dan Carsrud, and Chris Scholl all won their feature events.

In the 360 Sprint feature event Brad Nelson started on the pole and took the early lead. By lap six Chuck McGillivray had moved from his sixth place starting spot up to second place. There was a caution on lap seven when the leader, Brad Nelson, got into the back of a lapped car. This handed the lead over to McGillivray. McGillivray took a commanding lead and was not challenged the rest of the race. Lane Brenden was securely in second place. Mitch Runge came from the back to finish third after having to start at the rear for passing the pace car before the race. Brent Vonk and Daryl Reverts rounded out the top five.

The Late Model Stock Car feature got off to an exciting start with Chris Ellingson, Jordan Heiman, and Dale Furby all fighting for the lead. Heiman took the lead on lap three and never gave it up despite many challenges on the low side from Furby. It was a good battle throughout the entire race. A late race caution set up one last attempt for Furby to take the lead. 16-year-old Heiman was just too strong and took the H&H Mobile Home Service 38 to its first win. “The race took forever and I was just waiting for it to end,” Heiman said after the race. “I’m hoping the second one comes quickly,” Heiman said. Furby finished second followed by Gary Brown Jr., Don Gerritsen Jr., and Lee Schlumbohm.

Andy Anderson took the lead in the Wingless Sprint feature and never looked back. He led all 12 laps of this caution free race. The 2X of Gerod Olivier did all he could to come from his fourth place starting position. He ran out of laps though and ended up finishing second. Third went to John Kaiser while Jeff Davis and Willie Hasvold finished fourth and fifth. Anderson picked up the win just a few days after his 21st birthday.

The Sportsmen feature saw a great battle between Brett Larsen and Jamie Tieszen. Tieszen tried both the high and low lines to get around Larsen. He accomplished this task by going to the high side. Next Tieszen battled Greg Roeman for the lead. Tieszen was too much for Roeman and lead the remaining 10 laps to pick up his first win of the season. Larsen ended up in third while Kevin Spurgin and Nick Bahr completed the top five.

The Hobby Stock feature was one of the most exciting of the night. In the beginning Todd Penning, Greg Brandt, and Zeb Larsen got around Curtis Hansen in a four-way battle for the lead. After an early caution the three cars of Penning, Brandt, and Larsen were able to breakaway from the rest of the back and put on a great show of close wheel to wheel racing. A late caution for Tony Guischer’s spin led to a green-white-checkered finish. Greg Brandt tried everything he could to get around Penning in the last turn but Penning held on for his first win.

Dan Carsrud passed two cars on the first lap of the Factory Stock feature to take the lead. The lead was never challenged and Carsrud was able to stay out of trouble despite two cautions to lead all seven laps. It was Carsrud’s second win of the year. He was followed by Cory Yeigh, Travis Christensen, Ronnie Froke, and Jesse Ebbesen.

Dustin Gulbranson and Chris Scholl battled for the lead in the Hornets feature. Chris Scholl came out on top for his second win. Tyler DeMers and Garry Gulbranson finished second and third while Dustin Gulbranson faded back to fourth followed by Josh VanEngen.
