Hanssen Takes first win of 2005

By Shawn Neisteadt

(July 23, 2005–Madison, SD) Butch Hanssen is one of the top sprint car racers in the upper Midwest. That is why it was shocking that he was yet to win in the season in the middle of July. That changed Saturday night as he dominated the feature event at Lake County Speedway.

Lane Brenden took the early lead of the event with Brad Nelson following. With one lap counted it was Hanssen on the move as he drove by Nelson and into second in turn two. The caution waved on the next lap at the #101 of Chuck McGillivray looped around in turn two.

Hanssen, the veteran racer, wasted no time on Brenden, a sprint car rookie, on the start as Hanssen drove into the lead in the first set of turns. From there on it was a clinic as Hanssen maneuvered around the track and through the slower traffic masterfully to put his Kempf Construction #8k into victory lane. Brent Vonk drove from seventh to second with Brenden third. Randy Droscher was fourth with Dusty Ballenger fifth.

The luck of Jesse Akkerman turned around as he scored his second win of the season in the Late Model Stock Cars. Akkerman and Don Bickett ran side by side, swapping the lead for the first nine laps of the race. That action had the crowd on their feet as the action was great. After taking the lead, Akkerman drove the bottom line flawlessly to take the win. Lee Schlumbohm came from seventh to second with third going to Gary Brown Jr from the ninth starting spot. Bickett was fourth with Don Gerritsen JR in fifth.

Nick Bahr led all 12 laps of the sportsmen feature to take his second win in the class. Jamie Tieszen made a last corner pass of Paul LeBahn to take second, sliding LeBahn to third at the finish. Brad Winesburg and Kevin Spurgin rounded out the top five.

Aaron Penning took the lead of the Hobby Stock feature on the second lap and led the final 10 circuits to take home the trophy for the second week in a row and fourth time on the year. Lane Brenden drove from eighth to second. Thrid went to Justin Lebahn followed by Travis Morris and Jason Marko.

Derrick Nordstom took the lead of the factory stock feature from Jon Billyboy and put his #20x into the winners circle. Billyboy was second followed by Dan Carsrud, Jared Nytroe and Jeff Foster.

Chris Scholl was on a string in the Dueces Wild feature as he claimed the win ahead of Todd Dozark, Ryan Korthals, Travis Christensen and Justin Scarborough.
