Vonk is victorious at Lake County Speedway
By Shawn Neisteadt
(July 16, 2005Madison, SD) After winning his first ever championship title in 2004 at Lake County Speedway, Brent Vonk returned to the speedway in 2005 hoping to pick up where he left off. That did not happen though as the first half of the year passed Vonk by without one trip into victory lane. That changed this past Saturday as he scored his first win of the year.
Doug Martens took the lead of the sprint feature at the drop of the green with Randy Droescher in hot pursuit. Vonk drove from sixth on the starting grid to third within one lap. Vonk was challenged as Chuck McGillivray pulled alongside on lap six. Vonk held onto his position as the caution soon waved for Butch Hanssen as he came to a rest on the speedway.
The battle for the lead soon heated up as Vonk took second from Droescher then set out for Martens. On the eighth lap, Martens and Vonk were side by side with Vonk taking the lead. Martens came back to the lead on lap nine in turn one and the cars were seperated by inches as they raced into turn three where Vonk again took the lead. The battle for the lead ended on lap eleven when the handling gave way on the #51 of Martens causing him to spin in turn one.
It was all Vonk from there to the finish as he took his first win of the year. Droescher was second just ahead of McGillivray. Jesse Drost took fourth followed by Dusty Ballenger.
The late model stock car feature came down to the final corner. Don Gerritsen JR took the lead of the feature three laps into the event and led all the way to the white flag. On that final lap, Gary Brown JR looked to the inside of Gerritsen getting into the final turns. Gerritsen bobbled slightly and that allowed Brown to take the win by inches. Colter Deutsch was third with Jeremiah Jordahl fourth and Lee Schlumbohm fifth.
Brad Winesburg took the lead of the sportsmen feature on the third lap of the 12 circuit event and never faltered as he took his first ever win. Kevin Spurgin was second with third going to Greg Roemen. Curt Ottoson led the opening laps and finished fourth with fifth going to Mike McGillivray.
Aaron Penning took the lead from Mike Thompson on the fourth lap of the hobby stock feature and Penning went on to his third win of the year. Thompson settled for second with third going to Tony Guischer. Justin LeBahn was fourth with Dave Kennedy taking fifth in his first start at Lake County in a hobby stock.
Dan Carsrud edged Jeff Foster by inches to take his fourth win of the season in the factory stocks. Jon Billyboy was third followed by Derrick Nordstrom and Rodney Cook.
The deuces wild feature was all Todd Dozarks as he took his fourth win of the year with Chris Scholl second and Travis Christensen third. Cory DeMers took fourth ahead of Glen Higgins.
