Drost tops Ballenger by inches at Lake County Speedway

(July 9, 2005–Madison, SD) Its often said in the world of sports that its never over until its over. That has never ben more true than in the sprint car feature this past Saturday at Lake County Speedway.
Dusty Ballenger took the lead of the 18 lap event at the drop of the green and looked to have the feature well in hand. The only challenge Ballenger faced was from Jesse Drost in the early part of the event as Drost made a few looks to the inside of Ballenger in turn four. Ballenger corrected his line and made his way back to a comfortable lead. That lead began to diminish in the closing laps as Ballenger got caught up in traffic. On the final lap, Drost was again on Ballenger’s tail and looking for the lead. They raced off the final turn wheel to wheel, and at the finish line it was nearly too close to call. However, a slight margin of just a few inches was enjoyed by Drost as he led the final ten feet of the race to take his second straight win. Ballenger slipped to second. Chuck McGillivray drove from ninth to third with Brad Nelson fourth. Brent Vonk rounded out the top five.
It was a slide job in turn one on the eighth lap of the late model stock car feature that gave Lee Schlumbohm the lead. Schlumbohm never looked back as the took his second win of the year. Jeremiah Jordahl led the start of the race and took second. Third went to Gary Brown JR with Chris Ellingson and Matt Steuerwald rounding out the top five.
Steve Eliason had four career wins at Lake County Speedway but those were all in the hobby stocks. Eliason moved into the sportsmen class full time in 2005, and was finally greeted with a checkered flag on Saturday as he led all 12 laps of the sportsmen feature for his first win in that class. Mike McGillivray was second followed by Jamie Tieszen, Paul LeBahn and Kevin Spurgin.
Justin LeBahn held off Chad Patch to take his first win of the season. Patch settled for second. Lane Brenden came from ninth to take third with Zeb Larson in fourth and Chad Graves fifth.
Dan Carsrud led the entire distance of the factory stock feature to take his third win of the year. Derrick Lux was second followed by Dan Foster and Jesse Larson.
With one third of the Deuces Wild class having the last name Scholl, chances are best to see that name in victory lane. It was Chris of the Scholl racing family taking his third win of the year in the deuces wild feature. Todd Dozark was second followed by Cory DeMers, Christopher Syme, and Brad Scholl.
