Hansen Scores Lake County Win

By Shawn Neisteadt

(Madison, SD–May 28, 2005) It could be said this it is not your grandmother’s Lake County Speedway. Perhaps, with 19 Sprint Cars and 17 Late Model Stock Cars on hand, it could be said this is not the Lake County Speedway of just a few years ago. However it is said, the action is awesome.

Cody Hansen led all 18 laps of the Sprint Car feature for the win, however it was far from an easy task to take home the trophy. The battle for fourth was hot on lap two when Jody Rosenboom stole the position form Lane Brenden. The caution then waved for Ryan Bickett as he slowed in his #17b and came to a stop.

On the resulting restart, Rosenboom and Brenden both drove by Daryl Reverts moving Rosenboom up to third just behind Hansen and Randy Droescher. Lap traffic became a factor on lap three of the event. On lap six, Rosenboom took second from Droescher as they entered turn three. One lap later, Dusty Ballenger and Jesse Drost went wheel to wheel for fifth with Drost taking the position as they came off turn four. Drost continued to charge forward as he took fourth from Lane Brenden on lap 13. One lap later, lap traffic was getting the best of Brenden as he lost fifth to Dusty Ballenger. This was only the fourth start in a sprint car for Brenden.

With just a handful of laps remaining, Rosenboom was on the bumper of Hansen, but could do nothing with him as Hansen took the win. Ballenger came up to third following Rosenboom. Drost finished fourth followed by Droescher. All 19 cars that fired for the 18 lap feature made it to the finish. There was one red flag in the heat races when Chuck McGillivray jumped a tire on a start and tipped his #101. The crew had that car back in action for the feature.

Jeremiah Jordahl led the first lap of the Late Model Stock Car feature, but the lead ended when Lee Schlumbohm executed a slide job and took the lead on lap 2. Schlumbohm led the rest of the way for his first feature win of the season. Jordahl, who returned to action after a wild ride one week earler finished second. Matt Steuerwald was third with fourth going to Ray Sveegen. Darrin Korthals, in his first start at Lake County Speedway in several years, charged from tenth to fifth.

Brad Winesburg led the first half of the Sportsmen feature, but as he received the crossed-flags, half-way signal, his engine let go. That handed the lead to Jamie Tieszen and he motored his way to his second win of the year. Chris Ellingson drove Nick Bahr’s car to second followed by Paul LeBahn. Kevin Spurgin took fourth with Greg Roemen fifth.

Zeb Larson led all 12 laps of the Hobby Stock feature to claim his first ever Lake County win. Lane Brenden, the same driver that piloted the sprint car, drove from seventh to second. Third went to Chad Patch with fourth Aaron Penning. Travis Morris rounded out the top five.

Derrick Nordstrom drove to his second straight win in the Factory Stock feature followed by Jeff Foster. Third went to Jared Nytroe with Dan Carsrun in fourth and Derick Lux fifth.

John Howe took the win of the Deuces Wild feature. Garry Gulbranson was second followed by Jeremiah Bethke, Brad Scholl and Chris Scholl.

Lake County Speedway races again this Saturday night at 8PM.
