McGillivray wins feature, Vonk Crowned Champion

(September 18, 2004 Madison, SD) Chuck McGillivray took the win in Saturday nights Sprint Car feature, but it was Brent Vonk taking the championship, the first of his career.
McGillivray took the lead of the feature one lap into the 18 lap race and never gave up the spot. Doug Martens led the opening lap and caught McGillivray in lap traffic, but McGillivray was not to be topped. Martens finished second. The big story was Brent Vonk driving from eleventh to third to lock up the championship. Randy Droescher was fourth followed by Jody Rosenboom.
In the Late Model Stock Car feature, Matt Steuerwald led all 15 laps of that event to take his first win of the season. Finishing second and the 2004 Champion of Lake County Speedway in the Late Model Stock Cars was the #23 of Mark DeBoer. Kent Plimpton took third with Don Bickett fourth. Scott Overgaard crossed the finish line fifth.
The Sportsmen Stock Cars had a busy night of racing. The raced the regular feature plus had a special 20 lap dash for cash sponsored by Nordstroms Auto Recycling. The regular feature was won by Kevin Spurgin. Mike McGillivray took third. Jamie Tieszen finished third to successfully defend his championship of the previous season. Tieszen is now a two-time champion. Matt Ayres and Paul LeBahn rounded out the top five.
Greg Roeman led the first 10 laps of the Dash for Cash. At $50 for every lap led, that was worth $500. Paul LeBahns crew had the fastest pit stop worth $300. Matt Ayres led the next four laps for $200 before handing the lead of Jamie Tieszen. Tieszen led the final 6 laps for $300 and the $1000 victory.
Tony Guischer took the lead of the Hobby Stock feature with just three laps remaining. Guischer led the closing laps for his first ever win at Lake County Speedway. Justin Arends led laps seven through nine and finished second. Brett Larson was third followed by Coulter Deutsch. Claiming fifth and the championship in the Hobby Stock was 15-year-old Lane Brenden.
Derrick Nordstrom won the Pure Stock feature followed by John Paweltzki. Brian Sunderman, Skyler Sauby and Jeremy Scadden rounded out the top five.
Jeremey Fedeler took the lead of the Wild Ones feature from Jared Nytroe one lap into the event. Fedeler claimed his tenth win to go along with the championship. Cole McGlaughlin took second followed by Greg Jung, Nytroe and David Christensen.
In the deuces wild feature it was Dave Kennedy with his second win of the year. Kennedy held off Chad Larson, Larson finished second and took the championship. Chris Scholl was third with Jordan Heiman fourth. Myron Prussman took the fifth spot.
The season ended with drivers and official switching positions. Officials took the drivers cars for a six lap race while the drivers had to take the officials job. Chuck Zitterich won the event in Lee Schlumbohms car. Brian Rubin was sent to the back for driving too fast and came back for second in Chad Schettlers X. Tom Peterson took Scott Freets #69 to third. Shawn Neisteadt was fourth in Nick Beyenhofs #11. All in all, 9 drivers handed over the steering wheel for a fun event.
The 2004 season for Lake County Speedway is in the books. Now all that remains in the Husets Speedway National Cheaters Day this coming Friday through Sunday. Races start on Friday and Saturday at 7 pm with Sunday beginning at 5 pm.
