Drost gets first ever sprint car win racing at Lake County Speedway
By Shawn Neisteadt
(July 31, 2004Madison, SD) Jesse Drost has had a successful career in stock cars and modifieds. But in 2004, Drost traded in the bodies to join Team Crown and the #27 sprint car teams. Everyone knew it was just a matter of time before he won with the wing.
John Kaiser took the initial lead of the sprint feature. Chuck McGillivray ran second, but second row started, Drost was on the charge. On the second lap Drost took the second place from McGillivray. On the same lap, Drost took the lead as he wheeled past Kaiser in turn four.
Butch Hanssen started tenth and took fourth on the fourth lap as he passed Ryan Bickett. McGillivray moved into second on the same laps as he passed Kaiser. Hanssen continued his charge as he took third from Kaiser on the fifth lap. McGillivray then lost his second place to Hanssen on lap 13.
Out front, Mighty Mouse was saving the day as Drost worked through traffic flawlessly to score his first win in sprint cars. Hanssen was the big mover as he finished second just ahead of McGillivray. Kaiser finished fourth and fifth went to Bickett. McGillivray and Cody Hansen won the heat races.
The last time Lee Schlumbohm won a race at Lake County Speedway was the 2000 season. That drought ended on Saturday when Schlumbohm led all 15 laps of the Late Model Stock Car feature for the win. Rick Goth was again the hard charger of the event as he started tenth and worked his way to second. Matt Steuerwald made a last lap pass to take third. Jeremiah Jordahl was fourth with Don Bickett fifth. Gary Brown Jr. worked his way from the tail to the top five, but that run was slowed when a flat tire caused the two time champion to spin on lap 13. Bickett and Mark DeBoer won the heat races.
Nick Beyenhof returned to Lake County Speedway one week after he tore his car up in at nasty flip. The return was worth the drive from Rock Rapids, IA as he took the lead from Jamie Tieszen on the fifth lap and drove on to the win after starting seventh. Tieszen led the opening four laps and finished second. Third went to Paul LeBahn. Don Gerritsen Jr drove from twelfth to fourth with Kevin Spurgin fifth. Tieszen, Greg Roeman and Mike Forseth won the heat races.
Aaron Penning turned his misfortune from the week before around and scored his first win of the year in the Hobby Stock feature. Penning took the lead seven laps into the 12 lap event and went on for the win. Tony Guischer drove from eleventh to second. Lane Brended started twelfth to finish third. Starting ninth and finishing fourth was Justin LeBahn. Steve Eliason started tenth and made his way to fifth.
Jason Marko led the opening 7 laps of the Hobby Stock feature, but lost a tire in turn four. That ended his night. Penning, Eliason, and Marko won the heat races.
Jeremey Fedeler continues to be tough as the started fifth in the Wild Ones feature and drove to his sixth win of the year. Nick Lewis was second with third going to Greg Jung. Brian Heiman and Jared Nytroe rounded out the top five. Fedeler also won the heat race.
Chad Larson continued his winning ways as he picked up his sixth win of the season in the Deuces Wild class. Brian Heiman was second with third going to Dave Kennedy. Adam Hoefert and Travis Christensen rounded out the tip five. Heiman and Brad Scholl won the heat races,
Lake County continues the action this Saturday night.
