Runge Rights Season with Lake County Win
By Shawn Neisteadt
(June 26, 2004-Madison, SD) It has been a rough season so far for Mitch Runge, but he returned to his winning ways on Saturday night at Lake County Speedway. The same could be said about Gary Brown Jr. as he took the win of the Late Model Stock Car feature.
Doug Martens took the initial lead of the Sprint Car feature with Runge and Brent Vonk following. The red flag waved with one lap down when Brad Nelson spun and Jared Riedel flipped in turn two. Both were unharmed.
On the restart, Vonk used the very brim of the speedway to momentum his way to the second spot passing Runge. Vonk then took the lead from Martens entering turn three, but Martens regained the top spot in turn four. On the second lap Jody Rosenboom drove into fourth as he passed Cody Hansen. On the third lap Runge took second from Vonk then on the fourth lap Runge passed Martens entering the first turn for the lead. Vonk took second as they raced off turn two.
Traffic was not a hindrance as Runge handled it flawlessly to run to his first win of the year. Vonk took second followed by Martens. Fourth went to Rosenboom with Hansen rounding out the top four. Vonk and Chuck McGillivray won the heat races.
The Late Model Stock Car feature was quite and event as it came down to the very end. Four laps into the race the caution waved. Rick Goth had the lead with Gary Brown Jr. and Mark DeBoer following. On the restart, Brown went to the very top of the track and pulled door to door with Goth. Brown then took the lead on lap six, but the race was far from over. Goth battled back to the inside of Brown on lap nine. The caution lined the cars up on lap ten.
On the restart, it was Goth back to the inside of Brown as they battled for the lead. Goth used the inside to take the lead on lap 13, only to have Brown retake the top spot. The battle came down to the final lap with Brown edging Goth for the win. The victory was Brown's second of the year. Goth took second with third going to DeBoer. Don Bickett ran fourth with Matt Steuerwald in fifth. Steuerwald and Rob Anderson won the heat races.
