Hansen holds on for second win at Lake County Speedway
By Shawn Neisteadt
(June 19, 2004-Madison, SD) On a lightning quick racing surface, Cody Hansen would score his second career win.
Hansen took the lead in the fourth turn as they field finished the first lap of the Sprint Car 15 lap feature. On the second lap, Chuck McGillivray shot past Brad Nelson for second, but Nelson drove back to retake the position as they started the next lap. McGillivray passed Nelson again on lap three for second and this time the turn two pass stuck for McGillivray. On the same lap, Jesse Drost passed Randy Droescher for fifth in turn four.
The race started to shake up on lap 10 when Hansen led the leaders into lap traffic. On that lap, Drost passed Brent Vonk for fourth. On lap eleven, Drost was still on the move as he took third from Nelson. Also with four laps to go, McGillivray made the move for the lead and took the top spot from Hansen in turn two. Hansen was not about to let the win slip away as he battled back with the new leader. As they took the white flag side-by-side the lapped car of Daryl Reverts was bumped and stopped on the front stretch drawing the caution. During the yellow, McGillivray, the would be leader, pulled to the pits.
Hanssen led Drost and Vonk to the restart, but the battles would all be behind the leader as they ran the final two laps. Hanssen scored his second win while Vonk and Drost sliced and diced to the finish. Vonk took second with Drost just inches behind him. Droescher was fourth with Jody Rosenboom fifth. Reverts and Droescher won the heat races.
In a non-stop, action packed, flag to flag Late Model Stock Car feature the action was close. Several cars ran three-wide for several laps without ever making contact. Scott Freet took the initial lead of the races, but Kent Plimpton battled up for the top spot on lap four. Plimpton took the lead in turn four, but Freet battled back to the lead on lap six. On the seventh lap, Al Barnhardt slipped from third to fifth allowing Gary Brown Jr to take third. On lap eleven Mark DeBoer moved into the top five as he passed Don Bickett.
At the finish it was Scott Freet with his first win of the year with Plimpton taking a nice second place. Brown was third with Barnhardt fourth. Rick Goth made a last lap pass to inch DeBoer for fifth place. Freet and Bickett won the heat races.
Greg Roeman took the lead of the Sportsmen feature from Mike McGillivray on the second lap of the enent. Roeman led the rest of the way to take this first ever win at Lake County Speedway. Roeman has two wins this season at Rapid Speedway of Rock Rapids, IA. Jamie Tieszen came from ninth to take second. Kevin Spurgin was third from seventh. Chris Ellingson took fourth with Matt Ayres in fifth. Joey Hofer and Spurgin were victorious in the heat races.
There was plenty of passing in the Hobby Stock feature as no driver in the top four started in the top five. In fact, no driver in the top three started in the top nine. Colter Deutsch took the lead from Lane Brenden on the eighth lap of the race and went on to the win. Deutsch started eleventh. Brenden took second after starting tenth. Josh Klay charged to third from the eleventh starting position. Aaron Penning took fourth from the eighth starting spot. Chad Patch finished fifth. Curt Ottoson, Penning and Klay won the heat races. Andy Hansen won the "B" feature.
Jeremy Fedeler was on a sting in the Wild Ones feature as he took his second win in a row. Brian Heiman was second with Greg Jung and David Christensen following. Chad Larson scored his second straight win in the Deuces Wild feature. Myron Prussman was second with Dave Kennedy third. Todd Dozark and Larry Koster rounded out the top five.
Lake County Speedway races again this Saturday night.
