Bickett, Brown Take Trophies at Lake County Speedway

By Shawn Neisteadt

(June 5, 2004-Madison, SD) After being rained on two of the last three weeks, Mother Nature smiled upon Lake County Speedway and directed the rainfall away from the speedway. Also smiling were Ryan Bickett, Gary Brown Jr., Jamie Tieszen, Justin LeBahn, Greg Jung, and Jordan Heiman as they each took home a feature win.

Ryan Bickett jumped to the lead of the NMRA 360 sprint feature at the drop of the green flag with Justin Jacobsma taking second. On the second lap it was Jody Rosenboom charging from eighth as he passed Brad Nelson for fourth. On the sixth lap Rosenboom was still moving forward and pulled wheel-to-wheel with Brent Vonk. Vonk held the position and drove up to Jacobsma to begin a battle for second.

A rare occurrence happened with eleven laps counted as two cars flipped at opposite ends of the speedway. In turn four it was second place Jacobsma upside down after hitting the wall. Over in turn two it was Daryl Reverts flipping his #7. Both drivers were unharmed, but neither could continue in the event. Jacobsma's VanderBerg Homes #10 was destroyed.

Bickett led them back to the green flag and led them for the remaining four laps as he claimed his second win of the year at Lake County and second of the week as he had also taken the checkereds Monday night at Huset's Speedway. Vonk held off Rosenboom for second with Rosenboom third. Fourth went to Mitch Runge. Runge drove from eleventh for the top five finish with Chuck McGillivray taking fifth. Bickett and Vonk won the heat races.

Perry Tschetter took the initial lead of the Late Model Stock Car 15 lap feature event. The race was interrupted with three laps counted when Scott Freet slowed on the track. On the restart it was Gary Brown Jr. on the move as he took fifth off of turn tow then on lap four Brown went past two cars to takeover third.

By the fifth lap Rick Goth had driven into the second spot, but Brown was about to make Goth another victim as Brown drove into second as they entered the first turn. One lap later Brown was door to door with Tschetter. Brown got the drive off turn two and became the new race leader. At the same time Mark DeBoer took a spot in the top five as he passed Al Barnhardt. DeBoer was now the car on the move as he took third from Matt Steuerwald on lap eight and then passed Goth on lap ten for third.

The race was again slowed with just three laps remaining when the nose cone from Kent Plimpton's #19 fell off. Brown led the pack to the green and would go the finish unchallenged for the top spot. The race to watch was between Tschetter and DeBoer with DeBoer taking second off turn two on lap 13.

Brown took the win. The first of the year for the two-time and defending track champion. DeBoer took second with Tschetter third. Goth and Steuerwald rounded out the top five. Goth and Rob Anderson won the heat races.

Paul LeBahn led the first eight laps of the NMRA Sportsmen feature event. But it was defending champion, Jamie Tieszen driving from ninth to the lead on the ninth lap of the 12 lap event. Matt Ayres was also charging and drove into second on lap 10 with Mike Forseth following suit and taking third.

At the stripe it was Tieszen with his second win of the season and sixth of his career. Ayres was second with Forseth third. LeBahn was fourth and Kevin Spurgin rounded out the top five. Tieszen, LeBahn and Spurgin won the Sportsmen heat races.

Curt Ottoson was leading the Hobby Stock feature when the caution flew three laps into the race. Travis Morris and Jon DeBoer had tangled in turn two. It was take two for Morris and DeBoer as they again touched and spun on the restart. On the restart Justin LeBahn drove into second and pulled the train of Lane Brenden and Mike Deutsch along and up past Andy Hansen. The race had a new leader on lap four when LeBahn took the top spot from Ottoson. Ottoson held the second spot until a flat tire slowed him on lap seven.

LeBahn was not looking back as he took his first win of 2004 and fourth of his career. Lane Brenden took second. Mike Deutsch proved strong in his first appearance as he took third with Aaron Penning fourth. Steve Eliaoson was fifth. Tony Guischer won the "B" feature. Eliason, Morris and Jon DeBoer won the heat races for the Hobby Stocks.

Greg Jung checked out and drove to his second win of the year in the Wild Ones class. Behind him the rest of the field battled for position. Jeremy Fedeler took second with Brian Heiman third. Timmy Wievel was fourth followed by David Christensen. Fedeler won the heat race.

It's always exciting when a driver takes their first ever win. For 14-year-old Jordan Heiman it was his night as he won the Deuces Wild feature. Travis Christensen was second with Myron Prussman third. Chris Scholl and Dave Kennedy rounded out the top five. Heiman and Christensen were victorious in the heat races.

Lake County Speedway races each and every Saturday night at 8pm sharp.
