Hansen Scores First Ever Win
By Shawn Neisteadt
(May 22, 2004-Madison, SD) Only once in a career it happens. And in his second season of racing sprint cars, it happened for Cody Hansen, his first career win.
Hansen grabbed the lead of the feature as the green flag waved. Pole sitter, Justin Jacobsma fell into second just behind Hansen. Doug Martens and Brad Nelson were battling back and forth for fifth place on the fourth lap, but that battle would be interrupted by the red flag. Jacobsma had lost the handle of his #10 entering the first turn and tumbled. Jacobsma, a rookie in sprint cars, survived his first sprint wreck and walked away. During the red flag, Josh Holt had one of his damaged wing panels removed. Holt would restart second with a very oddly handling race car.
On the restart, Martens drove past Nelson for forth and Chuck McGillivray passed Holt for second. On the fifth lap McGillivray pulled wheel to wheel with Hansen in a battle for the lead. Hansen and McGillivray fought for the top spot and even banged wheels a couple of time. McGillivray was taking the lead when the caution waved again. Holt had slowed the #16v to draw the yellow.
The field took the green once again with nine laps remaining. Hansen led the race back to the lap traffic with 6 laps to go. On the eleventh lap, Terry Reilly was charging forward and he took third from Martens entering the third turn. Hansen was pulling away from the field, but there was a great battle for second on the final lap. Reilly was reeling in McGillivray and took second off the final turn.
Hansen led all 15 laps for his first ever win. Reilly drove from tenth to edge McGillivray for second. McGillivray was third with Martens and Nelson rounding out the top five. McGillivray and Holt won the heat races.
Matt Steuerwald took the early command of the Late Model Stock Car feature, but behind him the racing was furious. Mark DeBoer started eighth but drove into the top five only three laps into the 15 lap feature. On the fourth lap, DeBoer made it a three wide battle for third with Rick Goth and Scott Freet. Those three continued to run three wide when the caution waved with five laps counted for Jeremiah Jordahl who had looped his #3J in turn one.
DeBoer drove past Goth and into fourth as they restarted with ten laps to go. One lap later Goth was slowing with a flat tire when a couple of cars banged together causing the #20 of Perry Tschetter to flip. Not only was Tschetter fine, he took the car to the work area and drove back into the race.
The field took the green flag once again, and DeBoer was still on the move. He took third from Freet then on lap seven DeBoer took second from Kent Plimpton. On the eighth lap, Scott Overgaard drove past Freet and took over fourth. One lap later DeBoer pulled even with Steuerwald. Coming off the fourth turn the race had a new leader as DeBoer edged into the lead. Overgaard was advancing into third at the same time as he passed Plimpton.
The final caution of the event waved with four laps to go when Freet slowed with a flat tire. The restart had Gary Brown, Jr. driving into the top five then fourth one lap later. Goth was following Brown back to the front and drove into fifth on lap 12.
DeBoer was tough once again out front as he grabbed his third Lake County Speedway feature win of the season. Steuerwald was second with Overgaard third. Brown and Goth rounded out the top five. Steuerwald and DeBoer won the Late Model Stock Car heat races.
The top four cars in the Sportsmen feature were bunched up on the final lap. Kevin Spurgin had the lead but Jamie Tieszen was on his rear bumper, literally. The contact between those two allowed Joey Hofer to drive forward and enter the leaders' party. Spurgin led them off turn four for his second win of the year, and win 47 of his Lake County career. Hofer drove from eleventh to second with Tieszen in third. Matt Ayres challenged for the lead several time and took fourth. Gary Brown, Sr. took fifth place. Spurgin and Tieszen were victorious in the heat races.
The ending of the Hobby Stock feature was an exciting one as well. Lane Brenden had led from the drop of the green and led the field to the restart with just two laps to go. Colter Deutsch started eleventh, but suffered a flat tire on the opening lap which sent him back to fourteenth. Deutsch drove from the back to second with just the two laps to go. Those two battled it out to the finish with Brenden taking his second win of the year. Deutsch took second. Josh Klay drove from twelfth to take third in his first ever run at Lake County Speedway. Steve Eliason took fourth and Aaron Penning was fifth. The heats were won by Brenden, Deutsch and Klay. Tony Guisher took the win in the "B" feature.
Brian Heiman led the entire distance of the Wild Ones feature to become the first repeat winner in that class this season. Greg Jung and Jeremy Fedeler rounded out the top five.
Chad Larson drove from sixth to his second win of the year in the Deuces Wild feature. Jeremiah Bethke drove from seventh to take second. Brad Scholl was third and fourth went to Scott Kennedy. Myron Prussman rounded out the top five.
Lake County Speedway races again this Saturday night at 8 pm sharp.
